Algiers, Algeria | February 28th, 2025 — The National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) has issued a firm appeal to all media institutions, including television and digital platforms, urging them to uphold ethical standards and respect public morality in their programming during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a strongly worded statement, NOAJ underscored the sacred nature of Ramadan, emphasizing that this period is marked by deep spiritual and ethical values. Given the influential role of media in shaping societal norms and values, the organization stressed the imperative need to avoid airing content that could undermine the sanctity of the month or misrepresent Algeria’s conservative family structure.
“Television channels and digital media platforms have unrestricted access to Algerian households, making it their undeniable duty to uphold the customs and traditions that define our society. It is paramount that media outlets respect Algerian family values and maintain programming that aligns with the cultural and religious sensitivities of this blessed month,” the statement read.
NOAJ particularly emphasized the necessity of broadcasting religious content that faithfully reflects Algeria’s national religious reference, reinforcing principles of moderation, tolerance, and balanced discourse. The organization warned against content that could spark controversy or deviate from the nation’s long-standing religious traditions.
Furthermore, the organization criticized the growing trend of prioritizing commercial gain over the fundamental public service role that media institutions are obligated to fulfill, particularly during Ramadan. “The pursuit of profit must not take precedence over the essential duty of media to provide content that is enriching, meaningful, and in harmony with the spiritual and cultural expectations of Algerian viewers. Programming should promote national values, social awareness, and constructive discourse, all within the framework of existing legal and regulatory provisions,” NOAJ asserted.
The organization called upon all stakeholders in the media industry to work collaboratively to ensure that Algerian media upholds its responsibility during Ramadan, safeguarding the ethical and moral standards that distinguish Algerian society.
In closing, NOAJ reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the integrity of national media and ensuring that it remains a force for cultural preservation and societal enrichment, particularly during such a spiritually significant period.
