Algiers, Algeria | October 31st, 2024 — As Algeria commemorates the 70th anniversary of its National Liberation Revolution, the National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) has issued a powerful communiqué reaffirming the essential role of national memory as a foundation for Algeria’s future. The statement pays homage to the heroic sacrifices of the first generation of freedom fighters, emphasizing that honoring their legacy is central to building a New Algeria. In this spirit, the NOAJ insists that preserving historical memory is not merely a symbolic gesture but a lasting commitment to the values of independence and patriotism.

The communiqué underscores the significance of documenting the testimonies of Algeria’s revolutionary fighters, creating documentaries, and supporting cinematic efforts that capture the story of Algeria’s resistance against colonial forces. This mission, the NOAJ asserts, will enshrine the struggles and triumphs of the Algerian people in the face of brutal colonial oppression, framing the independence movement as an emblem of endurance, dignity, and an unwavering pursuit of freedom.

Acknowledging the vital role of national media in this endeavor, the NOAJ calls upon journalists across Algeria to renew their commitment to the preservation of historical consciousness, taking inspiration from the country’s legacy of resilience to foster a united future. The organization calls for a firm response to protect national sovereignty, reiterating that journalists must remain vigilant against threats posed by disinformation and other divisive forces aiming to destabilize the nation.

Reflecting on Algeria’s current state of heightened progress and self-determination, the NOAJ points to emerging challenges from external and internal actors attempting to undermine stability through targeted disinformation campaigns, particularly on social media. The communiqué sharply criticizes foreign interests and their agents, who propagate lies to serve external agendas, casting these actions as disrespectful attempts to exploit Algeria’s prosperity for trivial gain. The organization insists that Algeria’s recent resurgence has provoked animosity from adversaries unaccustomed to witnessing such momentum within the region.

In a resounding affirmation, the NOAJ urges Algerians to reject this divisive rhetoric and maintain trust in the nation’s institutions and leadership. “Awareness is our defense against these insidious plots,” reads the statement, which warns against those who have betrayed the nation for foreign interests and are motivated by undermining Algeria’s achievements. The organization vows to stand in solidarity against external attacks, pledging to confront malign narratives that compromise the country’s image and stability.

Further, the communiqué condemns the negative propaganda proliferated by media outlets that seek to question Algeria’s historical and geographical integrity. “These attacks on our sovereignty, bought at a high price by our martyrs, cross a line that cannot be ignored,” NOAJ President Soulaimane Abdouche declares. He emphasizes that the media plays a crucial role in not only defending Algeria’s historical gains but also actively shaping a future that respects the sacrifices made for freedom.

In the face of global media transformations, which, the NOAJ notes, have shown overt bias—particularly in coverage of the Palestinian cause and the destructive war in Gaza—the organization denounces the double standards applied in media narratives, especially regarding the Palestinian and Western Sahara causes. By contrast, it commends the professionalism of Algerian journalists who continue to uphold ethical standards while covering national and international issues. This professionalism, NOAJ asserts, should be preserved as a shield against the double standards that plague international media today. The communiqué expresses solidarity with journalists risking their lives in Palestine and Lebanon, calling them martyrs of truth in conflict zones.

Lastly, the NOAJ expresses unwavering support for Algerian diplomacy, which it describes as both principled and effective in its quest for peaceful resolutions to global conflicts. Algeria’s steadfast dedication to defending just causes—especially Palestine and Western Sahara—at the United Nations and other international forums, it says, exemplifies the nation’s legacy of integrity on the world stage. In closing, the NOAJ affirms its faith in Algeria’s independence, urging citizens to continue striving for a prosperous future worthy of the sacrifices of past generations.

“Long live free, independent Algeria. Long live our resilient and heroic people.”
