Government Officials Commend the Organization’s Commitment to Professionalism and Its Role in Safeguarding National Interests
Algiers, Algeria | February 22nd, 2025 — The National Organization of Algerian Journalists convened its ordinary general assembly on Thursday at the International Press Center, marking a significant moment for the country’s media landscape. The event, attended by prominent government officials and media representatives, saw the approval of both the literary and financial reports by an overwhelming majority, underscoring the organization’s credibility and its growing influence in shaping Algeria’s journalistic landscape.
Leading the official delegation was Mokhtar Khaldi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication, representing Minister Mohamed Meziane. Also in attendance was Noureddine Benbraham, President of the National Observatory of Civil Society, further highlighting the event’s national significance.
In his opening remarks, Khaldi conveyed the minister’s message, commending the Algerian press for its increasing professionalism and dedication to national interests. He urged journalists to solidify their unity within the organization and redouble efforts to uphold the highest ethical standards in media, emphasizing that a cohesive and responsible press corps remains integral to Algeria’s stability and development.
For his part, Soulaimane Abdouche, President of the National Organization of Algerian Journalists, delivered a speech that resonated with both gravity and urgency. He warned of persistent geopolitical challenges facing Algeria, particularly external attempts to destabilize the country. Abdouche explicitly pointed to Morocco, France, and other regional actors seeking to extend their influence, stressing the necessity of vigilance in countering misinformation campaigns and foreign interference.
Abdouche also underscored Algeria’s unwavering commitment to defending just causes on the international stage, with special emphasis on the Palestinian and Sahrawi struggles. He further highlighted Algeria’s exemplary leadership in the fight against terrorism and extremism, particularly in Africa, positioning the country as a key player in regional security and stability.
On the economic front, the organization’s president shed light on the positive trajectory of Algeria’s national economy, citing the rapid development of the agricultural sector and the country’s strides toward self-sufficiency in strategic industries. These accomplishments, he asserted, reinforce Algeria’s standing as a rising regional power with increasing economic leverage.
Turning to media affairs, Abdouche reiterated the organization’s firm commitment to advancing the reforms championed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He stressed that the president’s promises regarding press freedom and media sector development reflect a genuine political will to create an environment conducive to journalistic excellence and professionalism. The organization, he affirmed, remains a steadfast advocate for journalists’ rights and a key partner in shaping Algeria’s media landscape.
The assembly concluded with a formal recognition of Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane and National Observatory President Noureddine Benbraham for their contributions to strengthening Algeria’s media sector. The honors served as a testament to the government’s ongoing support for responsible journalism and its role in fostering an informed and engaged society.
