ALGIERS- The National Rif Party is making strides to raise awareness about the Rif cause and highlight the ongoing violations against the marginalized Rif population by the Moroccan government, including torture of political prisoners and daily persecution of its residents.

In a diplomatic move, members of the National Rif Party visited the United Nations with the aim of establishing a representative office for the party. This initiative seeks to garner global attention to the suffering of the Rif region and shed light on the injustices faced by its people at the hands of the Moroccan authorities.

The visit to New York, led by prominent figure Youba al-Ghadioui, took place on Monday, April 15. In front of the UN headquarters, al-Ghadioui conducted a live broadcast and took photographs, including one with the flag of the Republic of Rif displayed on barriers set up by police to prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing the international organization’s premises. During the live broadcast, al-Ghadioui announced forthcoming meetings with foreign delegations at the United Nations.

This broadcast, shared on social media by the party, lasted approximately thirty minutes and marked a significant step for the National Rif Party, following previous visits to South Africa and Algeria.

Last November, a delegation from the National Rif Party visited South Africa, where they held meetings with political parties, including the ruling African National Congress led by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Plans are also underway to tour other African and Latin American countries in the coming months.

The efforts to gain international support for the Rif cause were first announced by al-Ghadioui in Brussels last September. Weeks ago, he announced the opening of a representative office in Algeria.

In response to these initiatives, diplomatic sources, quoted by Algeria Now news website, suggest that the United Nations may be responding to calls from activists from the Moroccan Rif, who have been advocating for recognition of the Republic of Rif. These calls intensified following the systematic repression by the Moroccan regime against activists demanding justice, democracy, and freedom in the Rif, particularly after the violent events in Al Hoceima in October 2016, and the subsequent harsh crackdown on dissenters.

Many Rif activists have sought refuge abroad, particularly in Belgium, Canada, Spain, and France, where they have utilized social media platforms to promote their advocacy for the restoration of the historical Republic of Rif and the reclaiming of rights for Moroccans. This comes especially after seeking refuge in the arms of the Zionist entity, considering the removal of the monarchy system and the authority of the Makhzen as the only solution for Moroccans to enjoy their full rights, assert their sovereignty over their land, and improve neighborly relations with their Maghreb, Arab, and Mediterranean surroundings.

The Republic of Rif, established on September 18, 1921, during the French and Spanish colonial period in Morocco, lasted only five years. Founded by the revolutionary Mohamed Abdelkrim el Khatabi, it encompassed territories including Al Hoceima, Nador, Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Larache, and Oued Laou, with its capital in Ajdir.
