New Algeria Triumphs: A Crushing Defeat for Morocco at the African Union Summit

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers, Algeria | February 15th, 2025 — In a historic moment that reaffirmed Algeria’s diplomatic strength and credibility on the African continent, the African Union Summit this evening elected Algerian candidate Ambassador Salma Malika Haddadi as Vice President of the African Union Commission. The Algerian diplomat secured the two-thirds majority required to claim victory, triumphing over four other candidates from North Africa, including representatives from Egypt, Libya, and Morocco.

Libya was forced to withdraw its candidate after a dismal performance, while Egypt’s nominee was subsequently eliminated. This left only Morocco’s candidate in the final round—a candidate propped up by a delegation whose true leadership lay not with the nation’s foreign minister but under the shadowy command of the head of Morocco’s intelligence agency, the DGED. However, despite their relentless maneuvering, the Moroccan delegation suffered a humiliating defeat in the last round, as the Algerian nominee emerged victorious.

As the announcement was made, the conference hall erupted in celebrations, marking a symbolic moment that transformed the summit into a jubilant occasion. This was more than just an electoral victory—it was an emphatic rejection of Morocco’s corrupt, unscrupulous diplomatic tactics that rely on bribery, coercion, and the shameful degradation of national dignity.

Principles and Integrity Prevail Over Bribery and Betrayal

Morocco’s desperate and well-documented efforts to derail Algeria’s triumph were evident throughout the process. Resorting to its usual playbook of bribery, deceitful promises, and underhanded deals, the Moroccan regime attempted to manipulate the outcome in its favor. However, its candidate’s glaring incompetence, lack of knowledge on African affairs, and inability to articulate a coherent vision for the continent exposed the vacuous nature of Morocco’s diplomatic façade. In contrast, Algeria’s nominee stood as a beacon of competence and integrity, securing the trust and confidence of the African leadership.

This resounding victory is a testament to Algeria’s longstanding commitment to the liberation and progress of Africa. Unlike Morocco, whose monarchical regime has aligned itself with neocolonial interests and apartheid forces, Algeria has historically been a sanctuary for African liberation movements, steadfastly upholding the principles of self-determination and justice.

Africa Rejects Morocco’s Expansionist and Treacherous Diplomacy

The outcome of this election is yet another blow to Morocco’s desperate ambitions to manipulate African institutions for its own expansionist agenda. The Rabat regime, infamous for its betrayal of just causes and its alliance with foreign oppressors, was dealt a decisive rebuke by the African continent. Algeria, the land of one and a half million martyrs, once again stood tall as the unwavering voice of African liberation, triumphing over a regime that has consistently sold out the rights and dignity of its own people for political gain.

Tonight, Africa spoke—and it chose Algeria. The message is clear: principled diplomacy, rooted in history, sacrifice, and integrity, will always defeat corruption, treachery, and subservience. The Algerian victory at the African Union Summit is not just a win for the nation but a triumph for every African committed to a future free from colonial vestiges and opportunistic betrayal.
