Algiers, August 11, 2023 – In a significant display of mutual commitment, Algeria and the United States have underscored their shared determination to fortify the Algerian-American partnership. The heads of diplomacy from both nations, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf of Algeria and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, came together in Washington to reaffirm their dedication to deepening this historic alliance and promoting collaboration on various fronts.
During a press conference, the two diplomats celebrated the enduring friendship and cooperation between Algeria and the United States. They emphasized the growing political consultations and expanding economic ties that have paved the way for a promising future of achievements founded on the principles of trust, friendship, and understanding.
Shared Concerns: A Focus on Regional Stability
One of the focal points of their discussions was the situation in the Sahelo-Saharan region, particularly in Niger, Mali, and Libya. Both parties expressed their alignment on seeking peaceful resolutions to these crises, aiming to prevent the escalation of conflicts through military intervention.
Amid the ongoing Palestinian issue and the Sahrawi question, Algeria and the United States underscored their support for diplomatic efforts by international entities. They endorsed the endeavors of the UN’s personal envoy to facilitate a political process that encourages conflict parties to engage without preconditions or reservations.
Diplomacy in Action: A Bilateral and Multilateral Triumph
The Foreign Ministers were pleased to acknowledge the remarkable convergence of their countries’ stances on a range of bilateral and multilateral matters. They expressed their intent to persist in uncovering the immense potential of the Algerian-American partnership, with an emphasis on heightened consultations and coordination. These efforts will be particularly significant during Algeria’s upcoming term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Promoting Diplomatic Resolutions: Algeria’s Role
As the emissary of the Algerian diplomatic stance, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf embodied Algeria’s commitment to principled positions on key issues affecting the Sahelo-Saharan region. President of the Republic-designated, Attaf conveyed Algeria’s emphasis on diplomatic and political solutions to crises like those in Niger, Western Sahara, and the Sahel. His mission aimed to avert the destabilizing impacts of military interventions on the entire region.
United States: A Supportive Partner on Western Sahara
The Biden administration reaffirmed its alignment with Algeria’s viewpoint concerning the Western Sahara conflict. Secretary of State Blinken extended his support for endeavors to reach a consensual political resolution to the cause. He underscored his endorsement of the Minurso mission’s efforts to organize a self-determination referendum for the Saharawi people. Notably, Blinken omitted reference to the Moroccan Makhzen’s autonomy proposal, highlighting the United States’ dedication to impartial diplomacy.
Warm Welcome and Fruitful Conversations
During Foreign Minister Attaf’s crucial visit to Washington, he was accorded a warm reception by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. The United States’ recognition of Algeria’s pivotal international and regional role was apparent in the treatment afforded to Attaf.
At the onset of his visit, Blinken expressed his delight at hosting Foreign Minister Attaf, an experienced colleague. He recounted the extensive historical ties that have linked Algeria and the United States since 1795 and expressed optimism about the future of this relationship. In the spirit of mutual respect, the Biden administration conveyed its commitment to building a robust partnership with Algeria, rooted in trust and understanding.
An Ever-Growing Partnership
The partnership between Algeria and the United States is underscored by a strategic dialogue established in 2012. This platform facilitates discussions on economic cooperation, regional security, and global developments. The upcoming 6th session of this dialogue, scheduled for August 2023, serves as a testament to the enduring nature of this relationship.
Guided by its policy of non-alignment and positive neutrality within a context of Western-Russian polarity, Algeria maintains robust relations with the United States. This enduring friendship has fostered cooperation on security, counterterrorism efforts, economic endeavors such as oil exploration and agriculture, and more.
The American administration appreciates Algeria as a valued partner, expressing no qualms about Algeria’s desire to join the BRICS. Notably, the United States prioritizes mutual respect and cooperation over compelling its partners to choose between nations.
In a world marked by complex challenges, the partnership between Algeria and the United States stands as a beacon of cooperation, understanding, and shared goals. As diplomatic dialogues continue to flourish, both nations look forward to a future marked by even greater achievements and closer ties.
