Algiers, Algeria | October 1st, 2024 — During a visit to Algeria on Monday, Niger’s Minister of Petroleum, Sahabi Oumarou, expressed a strong desire for Algeria’s support in launching significant energy projects within his country. This statement was made during a tour of the Arzew refinery, accompanied by Abdelkrim Aouissi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy, Saïd Sayoud, Wali of Oran, and other local authorities.
Oumarou underscored the importance of these initiatives, which include plans for a new refinery and a petrochemical complex. “We are counting on the support of Algeria, our brother country, for the realization of these two projects, which are crucial for the development of the energy sector in Niger,” he stated. He noted that the refinery project is currently in the maturation phase and expressed eagerness to leverage Algeria’s expertise during the execution and assembly phases.
Highlighting Algeria’s pivotal role in the African energy landscape, Oumarou described the country as “the pride of Africa” and acknowledged its influence in developing energy infrastructure across the continent.
In response, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy assured Oumarou that the national company Sonatrach stands ready to assist Niger in enhancing its refining and petrochemical capabilities. He further indicated that Sonatrach is interested in exploring investment opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has already established a presence.
The visit included a stop at the liquefaction and separation (LQS) facility, where Oumarou attended a presentation on the Arzew industrial zone and its various units under the Sonatrach group. His itinerary also featured visits to the Algerian-Omani Fertilizers Company (AOA) and the Arzew refinery, along with the Sonatrach Management Academy (SMA) located in the same industrial area.
