Algiers, Algeria | October 26th, 2024 — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Nigeria a 3-0 forfeit victory over Libya in the Group D qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This decision follows Libya’s inability to host the match as scheduled on October 15, 2024, in Benghazi due to unresolved logistical issues that left the Nigerian team unable to participate.
In an official statement, CAF explained, “The match number 87 between Libya and Nigeria in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, scheduled to take place on October 15, 2024, in Benghazi, has been awarded as a 3-0 forfeit victory to Nigeria.” This ruling not only boosts Nigeria’s standing in Group D but also imposes consequences on the Libyan Football Federation, which has been ordered to pay a fine of $50,000 within 60 days for the disruption.
All other appeals from the Libyan side were dismissed, with CAF affirming the decision as final. This outcome fortifies Nigeria’s lead in Group D, now holding 10 points, followed by Benin with six points and Rwanda with five points. Libya, positioned last with only one point, faces significant challenges ahead in their qualification campaign, as only the top two teams from each group will secure spots in the final tournament.
