Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — Niger’s Petroleum Minister, Dr. Sahabi Oumarou, reaffirmed, today, the strategic importance of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, emphasizing Niger’s readiness to resume consultations and organize a ministerial meeting with Algeria and Nigeria in the coming weeks to advance this critical initiative.
During his meeting with Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, at the Ministry’s headquarters, the two ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in hydrocarbons. Minister Oumarou’s visit to Algeria, part of a broader working mission, was accompanied by a high-ranking delegation of officials from Niger’s Prime Ministry and national petroleum sector.
Both sides emphasized the deep historical and fraternal ties between Niger and Algeria, focusing on the significant progress made in energy cooperation. One of the key topics was the ongoing work by Algeria’s Sonatrach in oil exploration in Niger’s Kafra region, which has yielded promising results. This collaboration is expected to advance shared objectives in the oil sector, delivering substantial benefits to both nations.
The discussions also touched upon the transfer of Algerian expertise in refining, petrochemicals, and electricity production, as well as efforts to increase local content in energy development. Minister Arkab reiterated Algeria’s commitment to supporting Niger’s hydrocarbons industry, pledging to offer training and skill development programs for Nigerien technicians and professionals.
In line with this commitment, both sides agreed to integrate Nigerien personnel into training programs and internships at Sonatrach institutes, further cementing cooperation between the two countries.
A key focus of the meeting was the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project. Both ministers emphasized the importance of sustained coordination and timely execution of decisions made during previous ministerial discussions. Minister Oumarou stressed the project’s socio-economic benefits for Niger, Algeria, and Nigeria, expressing Niger’s eagerness to hold a tripartite meeting soon to drive the project forward and maximize its regional impact.
This renewed momentum underscores the shared ambition of Niger, Algeria, and Nigeria to enhance regional energy integration and create new opportunities for development and economic growth.
