ALGIERS- During the ministerial preparatory meeting of the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Uganda, member states unanimously approved the proposal advocating for the State of Palestine to attain full membership status at the United Nations (UN).

This proposal, a significant diplomatic milestone, received widespread support from NAM member countries. Notably, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria has been a vocal advocate for this initiative. He emphasized the importance of the Palestinian cause during the Arab Summit held in November 2022 in Algiers and reiterated the call in his address at the general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2023 in New York.

The discussions in Kampala resulted in a unified position where NAM countries pledged to continue the process of seeking recognition for Palestine as a full-fledged UN member state. This collective stance aims to uphold the two-state solution, which has been internationally endorsed as a permanent and definitive resolution to the Arab-Zionist conflict.

President Tebboune’s persistent efforts on the international stage have contributed to garnering support for the Palestinian cause within the NAM. The decision reflects the movement’s commitment to principles of justice, equality, and the rights of nations to self-determination, aligning with its founding principles.
