Normalization of Morocco-Zionist Entity Relations: Three Years Later!

Algiers, Algeria | August 14th, 2024 — On December 22, 2020, Morocco and the criminal entity formalized their normalization agreement in a scandalous ceremony in Rabat. As the third anniversary of this event passes with little fanfare, the impact of this rapprochement has not met the anticipated “triumphs”. Instead, Morocco is grappling with mixed outcomes, with public demonstrations against normalization and a government maintaining a low profile.

Normalization Under Scrutiny

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Moroccans took to the streets of Rabat to demonstrate their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid ongoing Zionist bombardment and atrocities since October 7. Reports from Zionist media outlet i24news indicated that over 10,000 protesters condemned the extermination war against Palestinians and voiced opposition to the normalization of relations between Morocco and the Zionist entity.

Morocco, the fourth country to sign the Abraham Accords—following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan—had initially anticipated a boost in international support for its so-called sovereignty over Western Sahara, as promised by the Trump administration. The Moroccan king, Mohammed VI, sought to leverage this agreement for enhanced military and security cooperation with the Zionist entity.

Unfulfilled Expectations

Three years into the normalization, the anticipated benefits have not materialized as expected. The normalization agreement’s primary goal—gaining broader international recognition for Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara—has not been achieved. Despite Trump’s declaration, no additional countries have acknowledged Moroccan sovereignty over the contested territory.

The Western Sahara issue remains on the United Nations decolonization agenda, and Western support for Morocco’s position remains limited. President Joe Biden’s administration has not fully endorsed Trump’s policies, including withholding the opening of a U.S. consulate in Dakhla and opposing joint military exercises in Western Sahara.

While Morocco and the Zionist entity have strengthened military and security ties—signing a disgraceful defense cooperation protocol in November 2021—these developments have been overshadowed by the ongoing genocidal war against the defenseless Palestinians. The ongoing war highlighted vulnerabilities in Zionist defense capabilities, raising questions about the anticipated military advantages from the partnership.

The Moroccan government faces significant public backlash, with widespread demonstrations reflecting the nation’s strong commitment to the Palestinian cause. Independent investigations have exposed efforts to manipulate social media sentiment in favor of normalization, which are contradicted by ongoing public protests.

Three years after the normalization agreement, Morocco’s expectations have largely not been met. While the diplomatic recognition from the U.S. provided a temporary boost, global support for Morocco’s Western Sahara claim remains elusive. Domestically, the strong support for Palestine and ongoing protests reveal a significant disconnect between government policies and public sentiment.
