Noureddine Benbraham Emphasizes Crucial Role of Civil Society in Promoting Electoral Participation, National Unity

Algiers, Algeria | August 13th, 2024 — Noureddine Benbraham, President of the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC), underscored, in Mostaganem on Tuesday, the fundamental role of civil society in enhancing the electoral process. Speaking at a regional interactive meeting titled “The Role of Civil Society in Electoral Awareness Campaigns for the Presidential Election,” Benbraham highlighted civil society’s pivotal contributions to voter education and awareness.

Civil Society’s Enhanced Role in Democracy

Benbraham noted that civil society’s involvement extends well beyond its traditional roles, reflecting the expanded scope of participatory democracy. “Civil society has been entrusted with additional responsibilities, encompassing a broad array of themes and social groups. It is essential for civil society to represent and defend these advancements while addressing the everyday concerns and needs of citizens,” he asserted.

He emphasized the importance of the upcoming election as a critical moment in the country’s political evolution. Benbraham stressed that fostering national unity and reinforcing the revolutionary spirit are vital to advancing Algeria’s political, economic, social, security, and diplomatic objectives. “Strengthening national belonging and unity is a significant achievement that must be preserved, as it represents a crucial phase in our political development,” he elaborated.

Promoting Electoral Engagement and Social Cohesion

Addressing representatives from the wilayas of Mostaganem, Relizane, Saïda, and Tiaret, Benbraham highlighted the importance of civil society’s role in aligning with the prevailing economic and social dynamics. He urged civil society to promote improvements in daily life and bolster social cohesion to address various challenges.

He praised the progress achieved and called for a strong voter turnout on September 7 to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to renewal, sustainable development, and stability. “It is imperative for all citizens to participate in the election to support national rebirth and ensure sustainable development,” Benbraham urged.

Support for Palestinian and Sahrawi Issues

In addition to domestic concerns, Benbraham reiterated Algeria’s unwavering stance on international issues, specifically the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes. He reaffirmed Algeria’s ongoing dedication to advocating for these critical issues on the global stage, underscoring the country’s firm commitment to these causes.

The regional meeting included two workshops aimed at civil society actors from the four provinces, focusing on their role in the electoral process and voter education. These workshops featured insights from university professors and experts, further emphasizing the commitment to enhancing electoral participation and awareness.
