Algiers, Algeria | December 12th, 2024 — On Thursday, Noureddine Yassaa, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, welcomed Mehdi Benmerad, the President of Green Energy Cluster Algeria, and Boukhalfa Yaici, the Director General of the cluster, at the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The meeting was convened to discuss strengthening cooperation in the development of renewable energy programs and projects in Algeria, a vital step toward achieving the country’s ambitious energy goals.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Energy, it was emphasized that the meeting focused on discussing key strategic areas to bolster investment opportunities and international cooperation in renewable energy. Special attention was given to fostering the private sector’s involvement in photovoltaic solar energy projects, which play a critical role in meeting Algeria’s national energy targets.

Yassaa affirmed that the Algerian energy sector is making significant strides in advancing new and renewable energy sources, with a particular emphasis on supporting local industries and boosting domestic content across the entire value chain. He stressed the importance of encouraging private investment and active participation in renewable energy projects, especially within the framework of the National Renewable Energy Development Program, which targets a production capacity of 15,000 megawatts.

He highlighted that the first phase of this ambitious program is already underway, with Sonelgaz, Algeria’s state-owned energy company, leading projects to produce 3,200 megawatts of renewable energy. This marks a crucial milestone in Algeria’s renewable energy transition, as the country works to diversify its energy sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

On the other hand, Benmerad presented a comprehensive document containing proposals and recommendations to further enhance the renewable energy sector in Algeria. He reiterated the Green Energy Cluster’s commitment to supporting industrialists, addressing their needs, and creating a favorable investment environment to increase the share of clean energy in the national energy mix. This aligns with the broader goal of fostering sustainable development and reinforcing energy security for the nation.

The meeting reflects Algeria’s continued dedication to fostering a robust renewable energy sector, promoting collaboration between public and private stakeholders, and positioning the country as a regional leader in clean energy production.
