Algiers- Algeria, May 5, 2024 – The summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, Gambia, wrapped up on Sunday with the adoption of a final declaration, which acknowledged and commended several initiatives led by Algeria.
As per a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, leaders of Islamic countries praised the consultative meeting held in Tunisia on April 22, 2024. This meeting, attended by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria, his Tunisian counterpart President Kais Saied, and the Libyan Presidential Council President Mohamed Younes El Menfi, was warmly welcomed. The final declaration highlighted the collective determination of these leaders to enhance security, stability, and development in the region through intensified consultation and coordination. They expressed a shared desire to strengthen cooperation and exchange information, particularly on issues such as terrorism, human trafficking, and organized crime, which pose threats to the region’s security and stability.
Furthermore, the efforts of President Tebboune in supporting the Palestinian cause were acknowledged by the leaders of the OIC member states. They expressed support for President Tebboune’s persistent efforts towards convening a reunification conference, viewed as a significant step towards Palestinian national unity, culminating in the adoption of the “Algiers Declaration” on October 12, 2022. The leaders also recognized Algeria’s endeavors at the United Nations Security Council to halt the criminal attacks by the Zionist occupation in the Gaza Strip, leading to the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2728 (2024), which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Moreover, the OIC congratulated Algeria on the inauguration of the Great Mosque of Algiers, acknowledging it as a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to promoting Islamic culture and heritage.
The final declaration of the summit stressed the importance of solidarity and cooperation among Islamic countries in addressing common challenges and advancing shared goals for peace, stability, and development in the region.
