ALGIERS- Money has often been regarded as having no smell, but when international corporations prioritize their financial gains over ethical considerations, it becomes evident that some have no qualms about the means they employ to make money. Orange Maroc, a subsidiary of the French telecommunications giant Orange, has recently drawn attention for its involvement in activities that undermine international legality and perpetuate the colonization of Western Sahara.
A Violation of International Legality
Western Sahara is recognized by the United Nations as a “non-self-governing territory.” While Morocco occupies these territories, imposing its policies by force, the UN Security Council has made it clear that the resolution of this conflict must involve a referendum for the self-determination of the Saharawi people. However, Orange Maroc’s recent activities demonstrate a clear disregard for international legality.
Complicity in Moroccan Colonization
In May 2023, Orange-Maroc proudly announced its “gold sponsor” status for an investment fair in Dakhla, a city located in Western Sahara. By associating itself with an event organized under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, Orange Maroc openly supports Moroccan colonization. Furthermore, the company’ senior executive referred to Western Sahara as “southern provinces,” a deliberate linguistic choice that aligns with Moroccan colonization policies. Orange Maroc’s actions go beyond endorsing the autonomy plan proposed by the Moroccan government; they actively contribute to the perpetuation of an illegal occupation.
Contradicting International Consensus
Orange and its subsidiary Orange Maroc’s position starkly contrasts with the stance of various international bodies, including the United Nations, the European Union, the International Court of Justice, the Court of Justice of the EU, the African Court of Rights of Peoples and of Man, and even the French government. These institutions and governments recognize the distinct status of Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory and advocate for the rights of the Saharawi people. Orange Maroc’s deviation from this consensus reveals a calculated gap that undermines the principles upheld by the international community.
The Implications of Orange Maroc’s Actions
The consequences of Orange Morocco’s unethical conduct will not be confined to the present. Those who exploit the abundant natural resources of Western Sahara for personal gain will ultimately be held accountable for their actions. The international community, through its collective efforts, has demonstrated a commitment to justice and the self-determination of oppressed peoples. It is only a matter of time before companies like Orange Maroc face the repercussions of their involvement in activities that sustain an illegal occupation.
