Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2024 — Algiers International Airport is set to experience a significant increase in passenger traffic in 2024, with projections exceeding 10 million travelers. This optimistic outlook was presented by Mokhtar Saïd Mediouni, the head of the Société de Gestion des Services et des Infrastructures Aéroportuaires d’Alger (SGSIA), during a forum organized by the daily El Moudjahid.
Boost from Air Algérie’s New Initiatives
Mediouni attributed this anticipated growth to the recent initiatives by Air Algérie, such as the Osra program, and the establishment of Algiers as a regional transit hub for routes between Asia and Europe. These changes have positioned the airport to handle increased traffic and enhance its role as a major transit point.
Launch of a New Terminal
In addition to the existing terminals—Terminal 1 for domestic flights, Terminal 2 for charter and Umrah flights, and Terminal West for international flights—Mediouni announced the development of a new terminal, Terminal East. Set to be launched in 2025, this terminal will feature state-of-the-art technology and facilities, further expanding the airport’s capacity and improving passenger experience.
Enhanced Passenger Services
To ensure high-quality service, SGSIA is focusing on several key areas, including better parking management, improved waiting areas, the opening of VIP lounges, and a newly opened library. For the Hajj season and the busy summer period, SGSIA has implemented measures to manage the high volume of travelers efficiently. Mediouni highlighted an instance where an aircraft with 260 pilgrims was processed in just 33 minutes, showcasing the airport’s enhanced operational capabilities. Seasonal staff have been recruited to assist and guide travelers, and special provisions have been made for passengers with reduced mobility.
Partnership with Ferrovial for Equipment Supply
In terms of equipment, SGSIA has entered into a project with the National Company for the Construction of Railway Equipment (Ferrovial) to supply various types of carts for baggage handling. This initiative will replace the previously imported rolling stock, emphasizing local sourcing and collaboration. Additionally, Mediouni mentioned several agreements signed with the Ministry of Higher Education to acquire modern technical and technological solutions for the airport. These agreements aim to positively impact airport management by introducing artificial intelligence applications, thereby enhancing efficiency and speed of services.
Upcoming Digital Initiatives
SGSIA is also set to launch a new application in the coming week. This app will serve as an information and interaction platform, providing details on flight schedules, available transport options, and information on Algeria’s tourist attractions. Mediouni also noted a reduction in air ticket prices for SGSIA employees as part of the company’s efforts to support its staff.
These strategic initiatives and improvements highlight SGSIA’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and positioning Algiers International Airport as a leading hub in the region.
