Algiers, Algeria | August 6th, 2024 — In a remarkable achievement for Algerian sports, Kaylia Nemour has made history by becoming the first Algerian, Arab, and African gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal. At just 17 years old, Nemour clinched the gold in the asymmetric bars event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivering a stellar performance that secured her a score of 15.700, including 7.200 for difficulty and 8.500 for execution.

Nemour’s victory is a significant milestone for Algeria and the broader Arab and African athletic communities. Her achievement not only places her among the elite athletes of the world but also sets a new standard for future generations of gymnasts from the region. She outperformed her main rival, China’s Qiu Qiuyan, who scored 15.500, and the American Sunisa Lee, who took the bronze with a score of 14.800.

In a moment of profound emotion, Nemour, adorned in her shimmering white leotard, broke down in tears of joy as she embraced her coach, Marc Chirilcenco, amidst the rapturous cheers of Algerian supporters at Arena Bercy. Reflecting on her historic win, Nemour described the experience as “the most beautiful day of my life,” expressing immense pride in achieving her lifelong dream.

“This medal is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication,” Nemour said. “I’m thrilled to have made Algeria proud. This is truly the pinnacle of my athletic career.”

Embassy’s Tribute

In response to this historic victory, Sara Sarwar, Deputy Head of Mission at the Pakistani Embassy in Algeria, extended heartfelt congratulations. In a statement to Dzair Tube, Sarwar praised Nemour’s groundbreaking achievement and conveyed her admiration for Algeria’s first gold medalist.

“I congratulate Kaylia Nemour, Algeria, and all the Algerian members participating in the Olympics,” Sarwar remarked. “We are incredibly pleased that Algeria has become the first Arab and African country to win a gold medal. This is a monumental achievement that deserves to be celebrated.”

Sarwar’s acknowledgment underscores the significance of Nemour’s victory not just for Algeria but for the wider Arab and African sporting communities. The medal adds to the legacy of Algerian Olympic champions, joining the ranks of notable athletes like Hassiba Boulmerka, who won gold in Barcelona 1992, and Nouria Benida Merah, who secured a medal in Sydney 2000.

This historic win by Kaylia Nemour represents a proud moment for Algeria and serves as an inspiring example of dedication and excellence on the global stage.
