Algiers, Algeria | May 26, 2024 — Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, speaking from Brussels on Sunday, called for the “continuation and even escalation” of international pressure to halt Zionist crimes in Gaza and to facilitate Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.
Addressing a ministerial meeting on the Palestinian issue between Arab and European nations, Attaf asserted that recent developments, including the recognition of the Palestinian state by certain countries and progress towards securing Palestine’s full UN membership, should not be seen as endpoints in themselves.
He emphasized that these actions, whether political, diplomatic, or judicial, are aimed at pressuring the occupying power to abandon three key misconceptions.
Firstly, Attaf stated, there is the mistaken belief that the occupying power can indefinitely defy the international community and its unanimous stance on the need for a just solution to the Middle East conflict.
Secondly, he continued, is the idea that the occupying power can unilaterally dictate the terms of conflict resolution to the international community because, ultimately, “this conflict must be resolved in accordance with international law.”
The third misconception of the Zionist entity, he elaborated, is its pursuit of the illusion of lasting peace in the Middle East without the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Attaf affirmed that “the establishment of a Palestinian state has been and will be a prerequisite for achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.”
Regarding diplomatic efforts, Attaf noted that “as part of the follow-up to the resolution recently adopted by the General Assembly regarding Palestine’s admission to the UN, Algeria, in close collaboration with interested and affected countries, will reconsider the possibility of resubmitting this question for consideration by the Security Council.”
Participants at the Brussels meeting expressed their support for efforts to end Zionist aggression against Gaza. They also discussed concrete steps to facilitate the establishment of a Palestinian state and urged the international community to recognize it, as recently done by Spain, Ireland, and Norway.
