Paris Grand Mosque Condemns Defamation Campaign by Far-Right Media

Algiers, Algeria | January 08th, 2025 — The Paris Grand Mosque has vehemently condemned a defamation campaign targeting both the institution and its rector, Dr. Chems-Eddine Hafiz, orchestrated by the far-right French television channel CNEWS and certain public figures.

In a scathing statement issued on Sunday, January 6, the mosque denounced the “malicious accusations” broadcasted by CNEWS, which falsely alleged that the mosque aimed to “destabilize France.” This inflammatory claim echoed earlier defamatory remarks made by former French ambassador to Algeria, Xavier Driencourt.

The Paris Grand Mosque categorically rejected these “smears,” emphasizing that they are part of a broader discriminatory strategy by CNEWS aimed at vilifying Muslims in France. “This campaign is part of CNEWS’ divisive agenda, which seeks to marginalize Muslims and deny them their rightful place in French society, while spreading the venom of far-right extremism,” the statement read.

The institution further highlighted that these attacks are directly linked to its outspoken stance against far-right ideologies, particularly during the June and July 2024 elections, where it took a firm position in defense of pluralism and equality.

Expressing regret over the French authorities’ silence in the face of such defamatory rhetoric, the mosque reaffirmed its historical and legal foundations. “The Paris Grand Mosque, an institution with a century-long legacy, operates under French law, like all affiliated mosques in the country. This in no way diminishes its historic ties with Algeria, which remain fully compatible with the values and legal framework of the French Republic,” the statement clarified.

The mosque reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a beacon of peace, tolerance, and interfaith dialogue. “We will continue to stand as an independent institution, representing the voice of Islam and all Muslims in France, while fostering fraternal dialogue with other communities and strengthening cultural ties, including those with Algeria.”

In closing, the Paris Grand Mosque warned that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against CNEWS or any other media outlets propagating false allegations that undermine the integrity of the institution and the dignity of the Muslim community it represents.
