ALGIERS- In a report sent on April 4th to the Council of Security, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the personal commitment of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to promoting peace and stability in the Republic of Mali.
This is the second time, in less than a week, that the UN Secretary-General has paid tribute to President Tebboune’s commitment to just causes and peace in the world.
At the end of the audience granted to the permanent representative to the United Nations, Nadir Larbaoui, who paid him a farewell visit, after his appointment to the post of the Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic, Antonio Guterres expressed his “admiration for President Tebboune’s global vision for world affairs”.
“This mastery of international affairs is now increasingly rare. I remember the in-depth discussions I had with President Tebboune during the Arab Summit held in Algiers on November 1 and 2 of last year,” he said.
In a report sent to the Security Council on April 4, Antonio Guterres praised “the direct involvement of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the efforts aimed at revitalizing the process of implementing the Agreement for the Peace and Reconciliation in Mali resulting from the Algiers process”.
And to recall that President Tebboune had “successively received, in January and February, delegations representing all the Malian parties signatories to the Algiers Agreement, in this case the Government and the politico-military movements”. In the light of these developments, the head of the UN “welcomed the leadership of Algeria”, in its dual capacity as “leader of international mediation” and “Chairman of the Follow-up Committee of the ‘Deal “.
In this regard, Antonio Guterres highlighted President Tebboune’s initiatives “to overcome the current stalemate in the process of implementing the Agreement which remains” in the eyes of the UN Secretary General “the privileged instrument to promote lasting peace and reconciliation in Mali”.
Noting that the report of the SG comes in anticipation of a meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Mali, slated for April 12, under the presidency of Russia. The Security Council meeting is expected to address developments relating to the political transition in Mali and the ongoing restructuring of MINUSMA.
In addition, the interest of the fifteen members of the Council should be focused on the current difficulties in the implementation of the Algiers Agreement. This situation is a source of deep concern for the international community, which encourages the Malian parties to continue to adhere to the spirit and dynamics of the Algiers Agreement, the ultimate objective of which remains to bring together the conditions for peace, security and prosperity in Mali.
