Pedro Sánchez Contemplates Resignation Following Investigation Targeting His Wife

ALGIERS- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Wednesday, in a letter published in X, that he is “considering” a possible resignation after the announcement of an investigation against his wife for influence peddling and corruption.
“I need to pause and reflect” in order to decide “whether I should continue to lead the government or if I should relinquish this honor,” he wrote, stating that he would announce his decision on Monday before the press and suspend his activities until then.
A court in Madrid has initiated preliminary proceedings against Pedro Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, to investigate her suspicious relationships with several private companies that later obtained contracts and public money from the government led by her husband, according to the Supreme Court of Justice in Madrid.
The case, which is being overseen by Judge Juan Carlos Benado of Court number 41 in Plaza de Castilla, is considering the possibility of committing crimes of influence peddling and corruption in the private sector. Among the initial measures ordered by the judge is the summons of several witnesses from the circle of the Prime Minister’s wife and officials from the companies surrounded by suspicion.
