Algiers- Algeria, May 13, 2024 – The international conference organized by the National Council of Pharmacists (CNOP), held under the theme “Pharmaceutical Landscape: New Horizons,” provided a platform for healthcare professionals to discuss the advancements and future of pharmacy in Africa. Representatives from 15 African countries, including officials, pharmaceutical industry representatives, and pharmacists, participated in the event. Algeria’s achievements in pharmaceutical production earned praise from participants, who designated the country as a model and a source of inspiration for the continent.
Under the patronage of the Ministries of Health, Industry, and Pharmaceutical Production, the event emphasized the importance of cooperation among African countries to ensure pharmaceutical security on the continent. Minister of Health Abdelhak Saihi highlighted President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to revitalizing continental exchanges and promoting intra-African trade. Saihi stressed the need for a new approach in pharmaceutical cooperation, advocating for African countries to work together and reduce foreign interference.
Saihi also praised Algeria’s expertise in pharmaceutical production, noting the country’s ability to manufacture high-quality generic and branded medications. He emphasized that Algeria’s achievements challenge outdated perceptions and demonstrate Africa’s progress in the field of pharmacy.
African speakers, including Arounan Diarra, President of the Inter-Ordre des Pharmaciens d’Afrique (IOPA), hailed Algeria’s leadership in pharmacy. Algeria’s success in drug production, with 80% of national needs covered by domestic production, was highlighted during the conference.
Algeria’s efforts, led by both the private sector and state-owned enterprises like Saidal, aim to achieve self-sufficiency and expand exports, particularly to other African countries. The country is investing in pharmaceutical research, innovation, and human resources development to consolidate its position in the global market and reduce reliance on imports.
Abdelmadjid Kerrar, President of the National Union of Pharmacy Operators (UNOP) and Vice President of the Council for Algerian Economic Renewal (CREA), affirmed Algeria’s willingness to transfer technology to certain African countries as part of its cooperation policy.
Despite challenges, Algeria’s pharmaceutical sector is emerging as a significant player in Africa, offering promising opportunities for its future development and contributing to the continent’s healthcare and economic growth.
