Algiers, Algeria | October 15th, 2024 — The inaugural Blue Economy Conference 2024, organized by the Algerian Business Incubator Leancubator, convened a diverse array of stakeholders to explore the vast potential of Algeria’s blue economy. A statement read on behalf of Minister Ahmed Badani of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Products underscored the importance of this conference in fostering collaboration among various ministries and institutions dedicated to the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture. Minister Badani expressed his gratitude to Leancubator for facilitating this significant international gathering.

The conference attracted national and international experts, researchers, economic operators, and professionals from various sectors associated with the blue economy. Their participation highlighted the comprehensive nature of the conference program, which aimed to enhance outputs through the promotion of professional clusters.

“Today’s meeting represents a renewed and crucial opportunity to support and encourage young initiatives aimed at organizing comprehensive national forums with an international perspective,” the statement emphasized. “This event blends technical and scientific discussions on various aspects of the blue economy, reflecting economic and developmental priorities.”

A key focus of the conference was sustainability and innovation, deemed essential for maximizing Algeria’s marine and coastal resources. The statement pointed out the vital role that fisheries and aquaculture play in enhancing food security through sectors such as aquaculture, fisheries, and fish processing. “Our sector is poised to significantly impact national economic development, given its considerable natural and human resources that enable it to fulfill its crucial economic and social roles in wealth creation and job generation,” it stated.

Significantly, the fisheries sector has shown remarkable growth, achieving a total production of 120,000 tons of fish products, which includes 7,000 tons from aquaculture. In 2023, the sector’s exports surpassed 35 million dollars, and it created over 160,000 job opportunities, with approximately 70,000 jobs dedicated to fishermen. These achievements reflect the government’s commitment to cultivating a dynamic blue economy, which has seen the establishment of 134 aquaculture farms and 59 cooperatives.

“The significance of today’s event lies in the government’s strong emphasis on this vital development axis, as outlined in the government’s action plan and our ministry’s programs to implement President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitments,” the statement continued. “Our participation in this economic sector, marked by sustainability and innovation in fisheries and aquaculture, is pivotal in enhancing national food security.”

Furthermore, the sector is witnessing the rise of 75 innovative projects and start-ups, as well as the creation of 12 incubators dedicated to aquaculture and fisheries. Among these initiatives is the pioneering AQUA-INCUB at the National Center for Research and Development in Fisheries and Aquaculture, which aims to collaborate with various sectoral training institutions to foster entrepreneurship and provide support for project holders nationwide.

In conclusion, the statement expressed best wishes for a successful and fruitful conference, emphasizing the importance of constructive discussions and rich presentations from participants. Minister Badani expressed hope that the event would produce recommendations to promote the sustainable development of Algeria’s blue economy and its interconnected value chains.

“Together, we reaffirm our commitment to enhancing food security in our country, and I express my sincere appreciation to all professionals in fisheries and aquaculture for their cooperation and active participation in this vital economic endeavor,” the statement concluded.

This inaugural Blue Economy Conference marks a significant step forward in Algeria’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the fisheries sector, promising a brighter future for the nation’s blue economy.
