Sahrawi Diplomat Rebukes Baseless Allegations as an Attempt to Undermine the Legitimate Struggle of the Sahrawi People

Algiers, Algeria | February 17th, 2025 —  In a firm rebuttal against circulating reports, Sahrawi diplomat Abi Bouchraya Bachir, the Polisario Front’s representative in Switzerland and to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, categorically denied the presence of Polisario-affiliated fighters in Syria.

Speaking to France 24 on Thursday, February 13, Abi Bouchraya asserted: “The Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic categorically reject these baseless claims regarding the presence of our fighters in Syria, on any side of the conflict.”

He further challenged those propagating such allegations to present concrete evidence, emphasizing that these accusations are part of a broader campaign to tarnish the image of the Sahrawi struggle. “Once again, we publicly challenge those behind these fabrications and their well-known backers to provide a single shred of proof to substantiate their claims,” the Sahrawi diplomat stressed.

A Pattern of Misinformation and Defamation

Abi Bouchraya recalled that this was not the first time the Sahrawi cause had been subjected to deliberate misinformation campaigns. He highlighted previous attempts to link the Polisario Front to regional conflicts, citing false allegations of ties to Lebanon’s Hezbollah and fabricated reports of Sahrawi fighters supporting Muammar Gaddafi’s forces during the Libyan conflict.

He reaffirmed that the very doctrine of the Sahrawi fighter and the Sahrawi army is strictly bound to the territorial limits of Western Sahara. “It is absolutely inconsistent with the principles of the Sahrawi armed struggle to intervene in conflicts beyond the geographical scope of Western Sahara,” he stated unequivocally. “The Polisario Front has never participated, nor will it ever participate, in any armed conflict outside of Western Sahara.”

Call for International Support for the Sahrawi Cause

Responding to a question regarding the expectations of the Polisario Front from the new Syrian government, Abi Bouchraya called for global adherence to international law and the principles of self-determination. “What we ask of the Syrian government and all governments around the world is simple: support legitimacy, support international law, and uphold the right of the Sahrawi people to a democratic referendum, as stipulated by the United Nations and international legal frameworks,” he asserted.

He concluded by reiterating that the struggle of the Sahrawi people remains a legitimate fight for self-determination and independence, as enshrined in international law, and that no amount of misinformation or distortion can undermine their rightful claim to sovereignty.
