ALGIERS- The political analyst Hakim Boughrara stated that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s visit to the Tindouf province, laying the foundation for the railway line and elevating the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet mine, falls within several crucial contexts, notably enhancing national security given Tindouf’s border status.
Boughrara emphasized that this initiative will bolster national security by providing a conducive environment for entrepreneurs and the local population. It will also upgrade public facilities to establish regional balance, particularly considering that the Algerian Sahara comprises only 20% of the country’s population. He added that these strategic projects, including the 950-kilometer railway, will serve as added value to national security and foster development between the Béchar and Tindouf provinces, promoting the Algeria-Nouakchott axis and facilitating trade, industrial zone establishment, and leveraging Mauritania’s Atlantic front for economic advancement.
Regarding President Tebboune’s visit, Boughrara highlighted its strategic and developmental dimensions, especially addressing the healthcare, infrastructure, housing, agriculture, and tourism needs of the Tindouf population.
Speaking about the Gara Djebilet mine, Boughrara projected that it could generate revenues ranging from $10 to $16 billion by early 2026, as indicated by experts. He underscored the mine’s strategic importance, its cost-effectiveness, and the abundance of iron ore on the surface. Additionally, Boughrara noted the potential for environmental enhancement through solar energy utilization and sustainable green projects.
Currently exploiting approximately 3 million tons of iron ore, Boughrara suggested that with the completion of the railway project, the mine could potentially reach 50 million tons. He emphasized that Algeria’s iron ore reserves of 3.5 billion tons present an opportunity for economic development, creating over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs and boosting air traffic and airport development, especially in Tindouf, transforming it into a strategically significant province with African dimensions.
