Algiers, Algeria | August 1st, 2024 — In a display of political unity, Algerian parties have broadly supported the government’s decision to recall its ambassador from France. This diplomatic move comes in response to France’s recent endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a stance that has been sharply criticized by Algeria. The withdrawal of the ambassador is widely viewed as a “predictable and sovereign” action, reflecting Algeria’s dedication to its national interests and sovereignty.
The National Liberation Front (FLN) has articulated its “absolute support” for the decision, labeling it as a decisive and appropriate reaction to a “dangerous and irresponsible” position taken by the French government. The FLN notes that France’s stance perpetuates colonial attitudes, undermines the rights of peoples seeking self-determination, and fails to contribute to a fair resolution of the Western Sahara conflict. The party argues that France’s position intensifies the political deadlock and contravenes international norms and human rights principles.
The El Bina Movement has also endorsed the Algerian government’s response, underscoring the importance of standing firmly behind the state’s sovereign decisions. Abdelkader Bengrina, the party’s president, criticized France for its persistence in a “colonial complex” and called for a unified effort from national parties, unions, and institutions to support Algeria’s stance on this crucial matter. El Bina believes France should focus on facilitating international efforts towards a just and sustainable resolution rather than perpetuating the conflict.
The Socialist Forces Front (FFS) has similarly backed Algeria’s decision, describing the ambassador’s withdrawal as a logical step given France’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan. The FFS condemned France’s actions as reflective of a neocolonial agenda, accusing it of supporting Morocco’s occupation of Sahrawi territories and violating international law and United Nations resolutions regarding the right to self-determination.
Fatma-Zohra Zerouati, president of TAJ, echoed the prevailing sentiment, characterizing the decision as both timely and rational. Zerouati emphasized the broader regional context and the significance of the upcoming presidential election in Algeria. She reaffirmed TAJ’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and freedom, criticizing France’s actions as a departure from international norms and a factor in escalating regional tensions.
