Algiers, Algeria | October 6th, 2024 — Algerian political parties have expressed a positive response to the new elements introduced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his recent media interview regarding the initiation of an open national dialogue. The timeline set forth by the president has received endorsement from various political factions, which view it as an opportunity for all political directions to adequately prepare for this important initiative.
A Commendable Initiative
Upon assuming office, President Tebboune made it clear that “during the second term, we will engage in sustained discussions and consultations with all the active forces in the country—political, economic, and youth.” Nadir Boulgroun, an advisor to the secretary-general in charge of information for the National Liberation Front (FLN), described this as a “commendable initiative” that has garnered their support. He emphasized that it reflects the principle of dialogue and encourages political actors to engage in analyzing pressing national and international issues.
Strengthening the Domestic Front
Boulgroun highlighted the necessity for a participatory democracy in Algeria, asserting that it is essential to reinforce the domestic front and safeguard the nation from destabilizing foreign influences. Regarding Tebboune’s proposed timeline of late 2025 or early 2026, he viewed it as a favorable sign that allows political parties to begin serious discussions within their ranks.
On the subject of revising the law governing political parties, Boulgroun commended the president’s intention to involve political organizations in this process. “The revision of this law is timely, as it will foster the emergence of a political class capable of contributing to the country’s development and securing a position in society,” he stated, emphasizing the potential benefits of this collaborative approach.
An Important Step
Nacer Hamdadouche from the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) conveyed his party’s supportive stance toward the initiative, asserting that it would be premature to pass judgment on the offer for dialogue at this stage. He stressed the importance of awaiting the official launch of the project to formulate an informed response, while acknowledging the MSP’s longstanding commitment to constructive dialogue.
Belkacem Djir, the communications officer for the National Democratic Rally (RND), underscored the president’s dedication to dialogue, calling it an “important step” given the current context. Djir emphasized the significant political, economic, and social challenges facing Algeria, as well as the regional dynamics that must be considered.
Contributing Proposals that Meet Expectations
Djir elaborated that these factors necessitate a “transparent, inclusive dialogue” that involves all political groups with societal representation. He noted that the president’s decision to allocate time for the initiation of dialogue signals his intention to avoid repeating past missteps, highlighting the need for thorough preparation.
This proactive approach will enable political parties to refine their proposals and facilitate consultations among various stakeholders, ultimately aiming to formulate contributions that align with the public’s expectations. Through these efforts, the initiative seeks to establish a foundation for a more collaborative and effective political landscape in Algeria, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among its citizens.
