ALGIERS– The director Hadjer Sebata’s short film “The Yellow Plane” will have its premiere at the Ibn Zeydoun Hall in Riadh El-Feth on Sunday, February 4. The event will be attended by the film’s artistic and technical team.

Produced by the Algerian Center for Cinema Development (CADC) with support from the Ministry of Culture and Arts on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of independence, “The Yellow Plane” explores a chapter in the history of the Algerian War of Liberation. This fictional work serves as a poignant homage to those who played crucial roles during the war, emphasizing the significant contribution of Algerian women to the struggle for independence.

As Sebata’s debut film, “The Yellow Plane” tells the story of Djamila, who learns about the death of her brother, Mustapha. Determined to uncover the truth about the circumstances of his death, she embarks on a journey. The film’s cast includes notable figures in Algerian cinema, such as the talented Souhila Maâlem, Nasredine Djoudi, and the esteemed actor Sid-Ahmed Agoumi, who expressed his pride in participating in this production alongside a talented young generation of actors.

Inspired by the popular poem of the same name, “The Yellow Plane,” the film is set in the village of Ouled Sidi Mansour in the Hodna region during the War of Independence. It revolves around the story of Aïcha and her brother Ibrahim. An T6 aircraft conducted reconnaissance flights to identify the locations of freedom fighters for bombing. Aïcha, having heard that her brother fell under the T6 bombings, addresses the plane as if speaking to a person, giving rise to the poignant words that form the popular poem.

The poem’s verses spread orally across villages, sung by those who lost brothers or loved ones during the war for independence. Over the decades, “Tayara Safra” became part of the national cultural heritage and has been interpreted by various singers, both in Algeria and throughout the Arab world. The film pays homage to this cultural legacy while highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of Algerian women during the struggle for freedom.
