Algiers, Algeria | December 4th, 2024 — The province ‘wilaya’ of Laghouat, draped in solemn remembrance, stood as a beacon of Algeria’s enduring spirit on December 4, 2024, marking the 172nd anniversary of the infamous Laghouat Massacre of 1852. This tragedy, a harrowing chapter in Algeria’s resistance against colonial aggression, was revisited through a powerful symposium titled “The Laghouat Massacre: A Crime Against Humanity That Shall Not Be Forgotten”. Organized under the aegis of the National Civil Society Observatory , in collaboration with the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders and the Wilaya of Laghouat, this event brought together an assembly of historians, legal experts, and civic leaders.
The symposium was inaugurated by the President of the National Civil Society Observatory, Mr. Noureddine Benbraham, accompanied by the Wali of Laghouat, Mr. Fodhil Douifi, and in the presence of prominent national figures, including Shamseddine Houari, representative of the Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders. The ceremony also saw participation from local authorities, military and security officials, parliamentarians, the academic community of Amar Telidji University, and a significant presence of students and civil society activists.
Exposing France’s Colonial Crimes
The massacre of Laghouat, executed on December 4, 1852, under the command of French General Aimable Pélissier, involved the first documented use of chemical warfare. The French forces deployed chloroform gas to exterminate the population, marking a brutal precedent in the history of international warfare. This barbaric act, targeting an Algerian town resisting colonial occupation, decimated its people and left a legacy of suffering.
In his keynote address, Mr. Noureddine Benbraham underscored the unyielding importance of preserving Algeria’s collective memory, honoring the sacrifices of those who fought against colonial tyranny. He eloquently reflected on the unrelenting courage of the men and women who faced the brutal onslaught of French forces led by General Aimable Pélissier. This massacre, which claimed thousands of lives, stands as a glaring testament to the colonial regime’s inhumanity, marked by the heinous use of chemical weapons—a first in global history.
Colonial Crimes and the Fight Against Historical Distortion
Benbraham delivered a scathing critique of the neo-colonial mindset that seeks to erase or diminish the gravity of such crimes. He warned against the selective application of justice by global powers that turn a blind eye to historical atrocities while championing human rights narratives elsewhere. Drawing parallels to contemporary struggles, such as those in Palestine and Western Sahara, he called for a unified national resolve to confront these double standards and defend the truth of Algeria’s history.
The Role of Civil Society and Technology
Amidst rising global challenges, Benbraham urged Algerian civil society to play a pivotal role in safeguarding national identity and countering historical revisionism. He highlighted the potential of digital platforms in disseminating accurate historical narratives and combating misinformation. Emphasizing collaboration, he called for stronger ties between civil society, state institutions, and academia to address the multifaceted challenges of the modern era.
The Wali of Laghouat, Mr. Fodhil Douifi, echoed these sentiments, reiterating the need to reinforce national cohesion and instill a profound respect for Algeria’s martyrs. He emphasized the role of such commemorations in inspiring future generations to honor their heritage and contribute to the nation’s progress.
Expert Contributions and Thematic Discussions
The symposium features thought-provoking interventions from experts, such as renowned legal scholar Fatima Zahra Benbraham, President of the Civil Society Network Against Global Neo-Colonialism, and researcher Dr. Mohammed Doumir. Their presentations delve into the historical, legal, and moral dimensions of the Laghouat massacre. From dissecting the French army’s barbarity in deploying chemical agents like chloroform to discussing the implications of these acts under international law, the discussions seek to anchor the tragedy firmly within the global discourse on crimes against humanity.
A Call to Action for National Unity
Glory to the valiant martyrs. Long live Algeria.
