Algiers- Algeria, May 8, 2024 – On May 8, commemorating the 79th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune delivered a message, reflecting on the significance of this National Memory Day:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,
Prayers and peace be upon His virtuous Messenger,
Dear citizens,
Today, on May 8, we observe the National Memory Day, recalling the tragic events of May 8, 1945, when the colonizer perpetrated brutal massacres to quell a burgeoning national movement expressing the Algerian people’s aspirations for freedom and emancipation. These demonstrations marked the prelude to the armed struggle that commenced on November 1, 1954.
The Algerian people, in their historic uprising in Sétif, Guelma, Kherrata, Aïn Témouchent, and other cities, surprised the colonizer with their determination, leading to a response of genocide, a crime against humanity. These horrific events transformed the national movement’s struggle into armed confrontation, embraced by the entire populace.
We have designated May 8 as a day of national memory, commemorating the sacrifices of forty-five thousand martyrs, celebrating the chapters of our national journey rich in struggle since the colonizer’s arrival on our soil.
The events of May 8, 1945, epitomize the rejection of colonialism, the yearning for freedom and dignity, and the sacrifices endured by colonized peoples for liberation and sovereignty.
The state’s commitment to memory stems from the appreciation of national responsibility in preserving the legacy of generations and pride in our past. It aims to repel threats to our unity and strength, as our enemies continue to target us.
Memory is inalienable and imprescriptible, requiring an objective and bold treatment that does justice to historical truth.
While we look to the future, credibility and seriousness are essential to honor the sacrifices of our martyrs and their legacy. We renew our loyalty to their oath, following their path towards a strong and sovereign Algeria.
Long live Algeria,
Glory and eternity to our courageous martyrs.”
