Algeria’s Tebboune Congratulates Tunisian Counterpart Kaïs Saïed on His Re-election

Algiers, Algeria | October 7th, 2024 — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune extended his heartfelt congratulations to his Tunisian counterpart, President Kaïs Saïed, following his resounding re-election for a second term in office. During a phone call on Monday, President Tebboune conveyed his warm wishes for prosperity and happiness to both President Saïed and the brotherly Tunisian people.

Kaïs Saïed, the incumbent Tunisian leader, secured a decisive victory with an overwhelming 90.7% of the vote in Sunday’s presidential election, according to the Independent Higher Authority for Elections (ISIE). The announcement was made on Monday, solidifying Saïed’s mandate for a second term as president.

Despite the sweeping nature of Saïed’s victory, voter turnout remained relatively low, with the ISIE reporting a participation rate of 28.8%. Ayachi Zammel and Zouhair Maghzaoui, the two other candidates in the race, garnered 7.35% and 1.97% of the vote, respectively.

The electoral body also highlighted that out of Tunisia’s population of 12 million, 9.7 million were registered to vote. Of this electorate, 6.6% were registered in overseas constituencies, representing a total of 642,810 voters abroad.

This election marks a significant moment in Tunisia’s democratic trajectory, with regional observers closely watching the political landscape as Saïed begins his second term.
