Algiers, Algeria | December 6th, 2024 — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have underscored their nations’ shared commitment to political solutions for resolving global and regional crises, free from external interference. The declaration followed comprehensive talks held at the Presidential Palace in Algiers during Ramaphosa’s state visit, marking a new milestone in the enduring partnership between Algeria and South Africa.

In a joint press statement, President Tebboune hailed the visit as a testament to the “special nature of historical ties between the two nations” and a reaffirmation of their strategic relationship. “Our discussions have revealed a profound convergence of views on key international and regional issues, reflecting the shared vision of Algeria and South Africa as leaders in the African and global arenas,” he emphasized.

The talks provided an opportunity for both presidents to evaluate the state of bilateral relations and chart a course to elevate cooperation in alignment with their mutual ambitions and geopolitical influence. President Tebboune highlighted the pivotal role of the Algeria-South Africa Business Forum in fostering economic collaboration, lauding the establishment of economic bridges between their respective business communities.

“The signing of a strategic cooperation agreement and five memorandums of understanding marks a significant step forward in strengthening our bilateral ties,” he remarked, emphasizing that these agreements are designed to solidify economic partnerships in areas of mutual interest.

Beyond economic matters, the leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on pressing international issues, including the ongoing Zionist aggression against Gaza and Lebanon. President Tebboune commended South Africa’s proactive legal action at the International Court of Justice, pledging Algeria’s full support for this initiative.

The Western Sahara conflict was also a focal point of their dialogue. The two leaders reiterated their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, reaffirming their joint commitment to advocating for decolonization and justice in Africa.

Addressing broader African security challenges, President Tebboune and President Ramaphosa exchanged views on developments in the Sahel, Libya, and Central Africa. Their discussions highlighted the necessity of political solutions to stabilize these regions and prevent further external meddling.

Concluding the talks, President Tebboune reiterated that the dialogue had reinforced a unified stance between Algeria and South Africa on prioritizing diplomacy and rejecting foreign interference. “Our partnership stands as a model for collaboration, driven by shared values and a commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity for the African continent and beyond,” he affirmed.

The visit of President Ramaphosa underscores the strategic depth of Algerian-South African relations, rooted in their historical solidarity during the anti-colonial struggles and their continued cooperation to address contemporary global challenges.
