President Tebboune: “Algeria is qualified to play role of mediation in Ukrainian crisis”

ALGIERS- “Algeria is qualified to play a role of mediation in the Ukrainian crisis, being among the few countries to enjoy the necessary credibility to carry out this mission”, President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, told Al Jazeera.
Speaking to the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera in an interview broadcast on Tuesday evening, President Tebboune stressed that his visit to Russia is still ongoing, and will take place next May at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Referring to the Russian-Ukrainian war, which broke out in February 2022, Algeria, noteworthy, positioned itself carefully equidistant between the two belligerents, taking sides with neither, but constantly defending the principle of conflict resolution by the peaceful means and dialogue. Subsequently, President Tebboune’s visit to Russia will necessarily be propitious to intercede in favor of the cessation of hostilities between the Russians and the Ukrainians.
Last week, the President of the Federal Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, Valentina Matviyenko, affirmed Moscow’s support for Algeria’s willingness to join the BRICS group.
Valentina Matviyenko said in media statements after meeting President Tebboune that she conveyed to him (President Tebboune) an official message from his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which included an official invitation to visit Russia.
The Russian official also indicated that she had sent an official invitation to the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to participate in the second Russia-Africa summit.
She added, “I expressed to President Tebboune my great thanks for Algeria’s balanced stances towards regional and international files, and Algeria’s adherence to good relations with the Russian Federation.”
