Algeria: President Tebboune Announces Re-Election Bid, Highlights Achievements and Vision for Algeria’s Future in National Press Interview

Algiers, Algeria | July 12th, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune granted an interview to the national press on Thursday, addressing several critical issues, including his candidacy for a second term, his recent working visit to Tizi Ouzou, and the significant achievements of Algeria during his current mandate.

Successful Visit to Tizi Ouzou

President Tebboune began by highlighting the success of his visit to Tizi Ouzou, expressing his gratitude for the warm reception from the residents. “My visit to Tizi Ouzou was more than successful, and I extend my thanks to all the inhabitants for their warm welcome,” he stated. He emphasized that Tizi Ouzou has entered a new phase of development and reaffirmed his commitment to listening to the concerns of citizens across the country.

Discussing the accomplishments of his current term, President Tebboune noted, “We have made significant progress in putting Algeria back on the path of development.” He highlighted that recognized indicators from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank point to genuine positive trends in the Algerian economy. “Today, everyone acknowledges Algeria’s successes,” he added, referencing Algeria’s participation in the G7 summit in Italy as proof of the country’s restored position on the global stage.

Support for Algerians Abroad

President Tebboune also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting Algerians abroad, stating, “The Algerian state protects its citizens wherever they are.”

Candidacy for a Second Term

Announcing his candidacy for a second term, President Tebboune emphasized that he would again be “the candidate of the youth and civil society” as he was in 2019. He stressed the importance of sovereignty belonging to the people, adding, “The sovereignty belongs to the people, and they grant it to whom they choose.” He also noted that “the era of posters and frames is over” and that it brings back painful memories. “We are in the era of persuasion,” he asserted.

Future Vision and Continuity

Looking ahead, President Tebboune stated that the next term would focus on continuity and ensuring Algeria’s comprehensive security. “We will work to consolidate everything we have started at all levels,” he emphasized. In response to a journalist’s question, he expressed his unwavering belief in Algeria’s potential, saying, “I have always believed in Algeria’s capabilities, and Algeria will continue to make history.”
