ALGIERS- In a significant development for African governance, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has taken on the presidency of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the presidency announced in a statement.

President Tebboune succeeds Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, as the head of the Forum, further solidifying Algeria’s role in continental affairs.

In his remarks, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune underscored “the relevance of this noble and crucial mission in a continental African context fraught with challenges, primarily related to development, security, stability, good governance, and unconstitutional changes of regimes.”

“We gather today, less than two months after celebrating the 20th anniversary of the mechanism’s creation. History thus imposes upon us the duty of remembrance to pay tribute to the founders of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) mechanism,” President Tebboune added. He emphasized Algeria’s pioneering role alongside South Africa, Senegal, and Nigeria in conceptualizing and implementing the NEPAD initiative, which later gave birth to the APRM.

“My country has always believed in the values, principles, and objectives of this African mechanism and continues to trust it to work towards its consolidation within the political, economic, and social structure of our continent,” the President continued.

A Unique Mechanism

President Tebboune asserted that “this mechanism remains unique compared to the work of regional organizations, as it represents for us a spacious platform for dialogue and exchange of visions, ideas, and analyses.”

“It is,” he considered, “a safe space where we can support each other in providing advice, support, and assistance to find solutions to the challenges facing our countries, regions, and our continent as a whole.”

Tebboune also expressed confidence that “this mechanism, born from the heart of Africa and for Africa, will contribute to helping us find effective solutions to our common challenges and to sharing best practices, experiences, and expertise in the field of good governance at the regional and continental levels.”

“In confirmation of this noble role, I accept with pride, joy, and determination the leadership of the African Peer Review Mechanism over the next two years, and I am fully convinced that I can count on the support of my predecessors in fulfilling this mission,” he added.

President Tebboune’s assumption of the APRM presidency signifies Algeria’s commitment to fostering transparency, accountability, and sustainable development across the African continent. As he takes the helm of this vital institution, all eyes turn towards the collaborative efforts and impactful initiatives that will shape Africa’s future under his leadership.
