ALGIERS- In his speech at the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called for a renewed commitment to the movement’s foundational principles. These principles are rooted in values of justice, respect for international commitments, national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and the protection of mutual interests.

They serve as essential pillars to achieve the goals set by the founding fathers of the movement, aligned with the spirit of the United Nations Charter, Bandung Principles, and the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

President Tebboune, represented by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, acknowledged the evolving and interconnected international and regional landscape marked by successive threats and complexities. These challenges, he noted, pose multidimensional risks and shifts at various levels that impact the security and stability of nations and the future of the collective security system inherited after World War II.

Highlighting the current international context, President Tebboune emphasized the acute polarization favoring certain international powers at the expense of others. This dynamic has deepened tension hotspots, reaching alarming levels threatening global peace, security, and universal human values.

In this context, the President considered the foundational principles of the Non-Aligned Movement as having renewed significance. This is particularly true given the resurgence of the use of force as an alternative to diplomatic efforts in resolving international conflicts. Additionally, the erosion of the collective security system, with the United Nations at its core, has weakened its structural capacity to limit and curb the policies of imposing the interests of the powerful over the weak.

President Tebboune underscored the importance of upholding the NAM principles to counterbalance the return to a power-based approach and address the challenges posed by the selective logic and double standards in dealing with core global issues.
