Algiers, Algeria | October 21st, 2024 — In a session of the Council of Ministers, chaired by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, critical decisions were taken regarding key national sectors. The meeting, held on Sunday, addressed several vital issues including student and researcher scholarships, the regulation of import operations, and the initiation of a historic cinematic project on the life of Emir Abdelkader, signaling Algeria’s determination to consolidate its sovereignty and cultural identity.

The meeting opened with a briefing by the Prime Minister on the government’s activities over the past two weeks. Following detailed presentations by ministers on issues spanning commerce, agriculture, industry, and education, President Tebboune issued strong directives aimed at addressing pressing national concerns, starting with the apparent laxity in addressing market shortages.

Strengthening Economic Resilience and Consumer Protection

Highlighting the ongoing issue of product shortages, President Tebboune expressed dissatisfaction with the observed leniency from certain officials in managing this challenge. He underscored the urgency for public servants to recommit to their duties with a heightened sense of responsibility, emphasizing that citizens must remain the government’s primary focus.

In a bold move, the president called for a comprehensive overhaul of the current legislation regulating the commercialization of national products. He directed the government to draft a new law enshrining price ceilings, which will be enforced by executive decrees, particularly when seasonal product prices reach unreasonable levels.

Tebboune also urged the government and regulatory bodies, including security organs, to intensify their oversight efforts, particularly in safeguarding the supply of essential goods such as foodstuffs and medicines. This heightened vigilance, he stressed, should be an absolute priority.

Balanced Import Policies for Sustained Industrial Growth

On the topic of import regulation, the president reiterated Algeria’s balanced stance. While affirming the country’s continued openness to the importation of raw materials essential for production and critical industries, he stressed that other import operations will be subject to prior authorization. This policy is not an outright ban, but a measure to prioritize local production and protect Algeria’s financial reserves.

“Algeria has never, and will never, impose an indiscriminate ban on imports. We only regulate them when necessary, to promote national production and safeguard our economic stability,” Tebboune declared. The president’s emphasis on bolstering domestic industries aims to strengthen the country’s economic foundation and ensure long-term sustainability.

Boosting Scientific Research for National Security

In a move that further solidifies Algeria’s commitment to scientific innovation, the Council of Ministers approved a series of measures to support scholarships for students and researchers at the elite Sidi Abdellah Scientific and Technological Pole. President Tebboune lauded the significance of this initiative, framing it as a cornerstone for Algeria’s national security and a vital step towards cultivating the nation’s future intellectual leaders.

“The creation of the Sidi Abdellah Scientific and Technological Pole is a national achievement,” Tebboune remarked. He tasked the Minister of Higher Education with ensuring ongoing support for these students, emphasizing that this investment in intellectual capital aligns with the broader vision of safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

Notably, the Ministry of National Defense will actively participate in this strategic project, reinforcing the alliance between academia and national security in preserving Algeria’s foundational principles.

A Cinematic Masterpiece to Honor Emir Abdelkader’s Legacy

In a landmark cultural decision, President Tebboune announced the initiation of a major international film project dedicated to the life of Emir Abdelkader, a towering figure in Algeria’s history and an icon of global humanitarianism. The president instructed the government to issue an international call for tenders, ensuring that this cinematic production meets the highest global standards.

“This film must capture the universal significance of Emir Abdelkader’s legacy—not only his pivotal role in building contemporary Algeria but also his international impact and humanitarian efforts in protecting minorities,” Tebboune stated.

By involving both Algerian and international cinematic talents, the project aims to produce a work that transcends national borders, portraying the life of the Emir in a way that resonates with global audiences. The president stressed that the selection of cinematic partners would be guided by the principles outlined in the project’s terms of reference, ensuring that the film does justice to the Emir’s historical stature.

As the meeting concluded, President Tebboune postponed several agenda items for further discussion and enhancement. This session of the Council of Ministers reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing Algeria’s economic, educational, and cultural priorities.
