President Tebboune Commended for His Outstanding Leadership of the APRM

African Leaders Laud Algeria’s Commitment to Governance, Unity, and Economic Sovereignty

Algiers, Algeria | February 17th, 2025 — At the African Union (AU) Summit held on February 15-16 in Addis Ababa, African leaders delivered resounding praise for Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, commending his exceptional stewardship of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). His tenure was hailed as a model of visionary leadership, strengthening governance, democratic principles, and continental solidarity.

In an official communiqué issued at the conclusion of the summit, AU heads of state and government lauded Tebboune’s “exemplary leadership” and “steadfast dedication” to democratic governance and institutional excellence across Africa. His presidency of the APRM, they noted, has reinforced the mechanism’s credibility, deepened intra-African cooperation, and set new benchmarks for transparency and accountability.

A Landmark Contribution to Africa’s Development

In a move further underscoring Algeria’s unwavering commitment to African unity and economic self-reliance, the Algerian government contributed $1 million to the APRM. This substantial financial commitment, leaders affirmed, is a testament to Algeria’s resolute support for African-led solutions and the continent’s collective efforts to strengthen governance frameworks.

Marie-Antoinette Rose Quatre, Executive Director of the APRM Continental Secretariat, expressed profound gratitude for Algeria’s contribution, emphasizing that it reflects the country’s “unyielding dedication to pan-Africanism, African renaissance, and the long-term vision of Agenda 2063.” In a statement to the press, she added:

“Algeria’s leadership in the APRM and its generous financial contribution exemplify the spirit of African ownership and self-determination. We deeply appreciate President Tebboune’s commitment to fostering good governance, reinforcing democratic institutions, and advancing Africa’s strategic aspirations.”

Pioneering Economic Sovereignty: The African Credit Rating Agency

Beyond his distinguished role in governance, President Tebboune, alongside the leaders of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zambia, was also recognized for his unwavering support in the establishment of the African Credit Rating Agency. This groundbreaking initiative, designed as a private-sector-led and self-financed entity, marks a significant milestone in Africa’s pursuit of economic independence and financial sovereignty.

With the continent’s economic landscape often dictated by external rating agencies, the African Credit Rating Agency is envisioned as a crucial step toward ensuring fair, Africa-centric financial assessments. The initiative aims to liberate African economies from external biases and empower nations with a more equitable and self-reliant economic framework.

The Addis Ababa summit once again underscored Algeria’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s governance, economic resilience, and collective future. Under President Tebboune’s leadership, Algeria has cemented itself as a staunch advocate of African unity, a champion of sovereign economic institutions, and a driving force behind the continent’s democratic and developmental aspirations.
