Algiers, Algeria | December 16th, 2024 — In a bold reaffirmation of his commitment to preserving Algeria’s rich cultural heritage, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday underscored the urgent need for effective solutions to safeguard the architectural and historical integrity of the Casbah of Algiers. Known as the soul of the capital, the Casbah is home to invaluable monuments that are central to the nation’s identity.

During a presentation at the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture, where he was briefed on the strategic development and modernization vision for Algiers, President Tebboune emphasized that the deterioration of the Casbah’s structures, which has been ongoing since the 1970s, requires immediate intervention. He noted that these buildings, many of which are privately owned, must be incorporated into the national domain to ensure their restoration and to revitalize the area.

“The Casbah is the heart of the capital, and its monuments belong to all Algerians,” stated the President, asserting that restoring this historic district is crucial not only for preserving national heritage but also for transforming it into a vibrant hub for cultural, artistic, tourist, and craft activities. The intervention, he proposed, would be aimed at both protecting the area’s architectural character and enhancing its functionality.

President Tebboune further called for the rehabilitation of Riadh El-Feth, one of Algiers’ key recreational areas, to meet the expectations of families who frequent it. He also highlighted the need to complete the development works in Oued El-Harrach and integrate the Oued Koriche district into the broader modernization strategy for the capital.

In his remarks, the President also placed significant emphasis on a high-profile development project: the construction of the largest aquarium in the Mediterranean region. This ambitious initiative, he said, should focus on its potential for tourism, particularly by offering educational excursions for children and students. He instructed officials to expedite the tender process for the project to ensure its swift commencement.

The overarching goal, President Tebboune remarked, is to enhance the quality of life for Algiers’ residents by providing modern infrastructure and facilities that rival those of major global capitals. He noted that the completion of these projects is not only crucial for the aesthetic and practical advancement of the capital but will also elevate Algiers as a beacon of Arab-Islamic, African, and Mediterranean influence.

As part of the development strategy, several key plans have been outlined: a “White Plan” for urban planning and building restoration, a “Yellow Plan” to address transportation and mobility within the city, a “Green Plan” to restore ecological balance and improve the capital’s environmental conditions, and a “Blue Plan” designed to reconnect the city to the sea. These initiatives are accompanied by a series of ongoing projects, with many more set to be completed in the short to medium term. Among these is the planned revitalization of Algiers’ waterfront and other projects aimed at boosting various sectors across the capital.

President Tebboune’s strategic vision for the capital is designed not only to modernize Algiers but also to ensure that its historical and architectural identity is preserved for future generations.
