President Tebboune, Goudjil, and Boughali Mourn the Passing of Sheikh Mohamed Abdelatif Belkaid, a Pillar of Algerian Sufism

National Leaders Pay Tribute to the Erudite Scholar and Spiritual Guide

Algiers, Algeria | February 27th, 2025 — President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has extended his deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, disciples, and admirers of the esteemed Sheikh Mohamed Abdelatif Belkaid Al-Idrissi Al-Hassani, Sheikh of the Zaouïa Belkaidia Hebria, who passed away at the age of 88.

 

In his message of condolence, President Tebboune invoked a verse from the Holy Quran, underscoring the unwavering commitment of pious individuals to their faith: “Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some of them still wait, but they have never changed in the least.” He emphasized that Algeria has lost a revered scholar, a noble descendant of a distinguished lineage, and a custodian of knowledge and spiritual guidance. Sheikh Belkaid was a beacon of religious wisdom and an unwavering advocate for the preservation of Algeria’s religious and cultural heritage.

 

Tebboune highlighted that the late Sheikh dedicated his life to the service of Islam and the homeland, ensuring the continuation of Algeria’s religious reference. His teachings, particularly through the Leçons Mohammadiennes, have played a pivotal role in reinforcing the essential function of Zaouïas as centers of learning, moderation, and spiritual discipline. The President expressed his profound grief over this painful loss, extending prayers that Allah grants the departed soul eternal mercy and a place among the righteous and virtuous.

 

Goudjil and Boughali Mourn the Loss of a Revered Spiritual Figure

 

The Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Salah Goudjil, also extended his heartfelt condolences, lamenting the departure of a deeply pious and erudite man who upheld the values of Sufism with steadfast devotion. “Algeria bids farewell, with immense sorrow, to Sheikh Mohamed Abdelatif Belkaid, a spiritual luminary who dedicated his life to the propagation of religious knowledge and the legacy of our Prophet,” stated Goudjil. He described the late Sheikh as a man of virtue and unwavering faith, who remained steadfast in his teachings and commitment to Sufi principles until his final days. Goudjil expressed his deep solidarity with the grieving family, praying that the Almighty grants them patience and solace in this difficult time.

 

Similarly, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali, conveyed his condolences, emphasizing the profound sorrow felt by the nation. “With full submission to the will of Allah, we receive the news of the passing of our venerable Sheikh Mohamed Abdelatif Belkaid with immense grief and sorrow,” he stated. He underscored the Sheikh’s remarkable legacy as an educator and a guide, whose scholarly contributions will continue to illuminate the path of future generations. Boughali reaffirmed that Sheikh Belkaid’s dedication to the Zaouïa Belkaidia El Hebria made it a stronghold of Quranic knowledge, spirituality, and righteous conduct.
