Algiers, Algeria | August 14th, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune hosted a grand ceremony at the El-Mouradia Palace to celebrate Algeria’s exceptional athletes who triumphed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The event was a tribute to their remarkable achievements and a recognition of their dedication on the international stage.

During the ceremony, President Tebboune awarded the prestigious Order of National Merit to the athletes, alongside substantial financial rewards. The honored athletes included Imane Khelif, who won gold in women’s boxing (66 kg), Kaylia Nemour, who achieved gold in gymnastics on the uneven bars, and Djamel Sedjati, who secured bronze in the 800 meters. The ceremony was further distinguished by the presence of the athletes’ families, who shared in the national pride of these champions.

The event was attended by a host of high-ranking officials, including the Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), the Director of Cabinet at the Presidency, the President’s personal secretary, the Secretary General of the Presidency, and the Minister of Youth and Sports. The President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA), coaches, and other dignitaries were also present, underscoring the importance of these achievements for Algerian sports.

This celebration followed the athletes’ triumphant return from Paris on Monday. They were met with a warm reception at Houari Boumediene Airport by Minister of Youth and Sports Abderrahmane Hammad, along with senior civil and military officials. The athletes’ success has been hailed as historic, matching Algeria’s best-ever Olympic performance set in Atlanta 1996, where the nation also earned two gold medals and one bronze.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Algeria was represented by a contingent of 46 athletes—27 men and 19 women—competing in 15 disciplines. Kaylia Nemour’s standout performance in gymnastics and Imane Khelif’s boxing prowess, along with Djamel Sedjati’s bronze in the 800 meters, showcased the strength and determination of Algerian athletes. Sedjati’s bronze marked the first in this event since 1996, highlighting a significant achievement for the nation.
