With the inauguration of the ‘Fouka 2’ desalination plant, Algeria strengthens its water security strategy while advancing towards economic transformation, inspired by the revolutionary spirit of November 1954.

Algiers, Algeria | February 22nd, 2025 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast march towards emerging nation status, commending the resilience and determination of the Algerian people in overcoming challenges across all sectors. Speaking on Saturday in Tipasa, the Head of State emphasized that today’s progress is deeply rooted in the spirit of the historic November 1954 Revolution.

“This is the Algeria we all cherish—an Algeria that triumphs over obstacles, drawing inspiration from the glorious generation of November 1, 1954, which expelled the world’s fifth-largest colonial power using hunting rifles,” declared President Tebboune. He described the country’s ongoing accomplishments as a source of national pride, affirming that each step forward brings Algeria closer to the global stage of emerging economies.

A Monumental Achievement in Water Security

Following a detailed presentation on the newly completed ‘Fouka 2′ seawater desalination plant in Tipasa, which he officially inaugurated, President Tebboune expressed deep gratitude to all individuals involved in the project. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the workers, engineers, technicians, and managers who contributed to this exceptional accomplishment,” he stated, further acknowledging the role of the energy and hydraulic sectors as well as Sonatrach in bringing this ambitious project to fruition.

Highlighting the plant’s strategic importance, the President underscored that the use of cutting-edge technologies ensured the preservation of fertile agricultural land, reflecting a balanced approach that meets citizens’ water needs without compromising national food security. “This is a realization of which we are proud today, and will remain proud of tomorrow and in the future,” he affirmed.

The Head of State also referenced similar projects completed in Boumerdès, Béjaïa, and El Tarf, as well as the recently inaugurated Cap Blanc desalination plant in Oran. He emphasized that these large-scale initiatives have successfully met the potable water needs of Algerians, particularly in light of the region’s increasing water scarcity due to declining rainfall.

“These projects represent invaluable and strategic efforts at a time when the Maghreb is experiencing growing water shortages. Thankfully, we initiated seawater desalination three years ago, proving it to be a wise and forward-thinking solution,” President Tebboune noted. He further pledged continued efforts to implement tailored water security solutions for all regions of the country.

The inauguration of the ‘Fouka 2’ desalination plant took place in the presence of high-ranking officials, including the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha; Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab; Minister of Interior, Local Authorities, and Urban Planning, Brahim Merad; Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal; and senior executives from national enterprises responsible for the plant’s execution.
