Algeria Reinforces Commitment to Africa’s Development and Governance Framework
Algiers, Algeria | February 14th, 2025 — In a powerful display of Algeria’s unwavering commitment to Africa’s governance and stability, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Friday that Algeria will voluntarily contribute $1 million to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). This financial injection aims to catalyze the implementation of key programs and address the mechanism’s pressing financial constraints.
During the inauguration of the 34th Ordinary Session of the Forum of Heads of State and Government of the APRM at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Tebboune underscored the dire financial situation hindering the mechanism’s operations. He called upon member states to honor their financial obligations based on their capacities, emphasizing the urgency of collective efforts to sustain Africa’s development agenda.
“The precarious financial situation of our mechanism hampers its work and delays the execution of its programs,” stated President Tebboune. “Algeria, as a responsible and dedicated African nation, will voluntarily inject $1 million to support its activities and ensure its operational efficiency.”
Strengthening African Unity and Governance
President Tebboune’s address resonated with a strong call for African nations to unite in their pursuit of stability, governance, and economic prosperity. “We must work together to elevate our continent and defend the interests of our peoples,” he urged.
In a gesture of diplomatic recognition, the Algerian leader extended his gratitude to Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of Mauritania and current Chairperson of the African Union, as well as Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, for their efforts in advancing the union’s objectives.
Highlighting the APRM’s essential role in promoting good governance and political stability, President Tebboune dismissed the notion that the mechanism is merely a symbolic initiative. “The African Peer Review Mechanism has become an instrumental tool in fostering good governance and ensuring regional stability. It is not, and must never be, a mere formality,” he affirmed.
Tebboune further aligned his stance with that of AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, acknowledging the pressing challenges confronting Africa and the necessity for a responsible and proactive approach to addressing them.
Algeria at the Helm of the APRM Forum
As the current Chair of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government since February 2024, President Tebboune presided over the high-level summit, which brought together various African leaders and senior officials from AU institutions. Among the notable Algerian officials in attendance were Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Health Abdelhak Saihi, Minister of Environment and Quality of Life Nadjiba Djilali, and Secretary of State for African Affairs Salma Bekhta Mansouri.
Also present were Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ammar Bendjama, and Algeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Salma Malika Hedadi. The strong Algerian delegation underscored the country’s strategic engagement in African affairs and its dedication to reinforcing governance mechanisms across the continent.
Diplomatic Engagements and High-Level Meetings
In the lead-up to the summit, President Tebboune held several meetings with African leaders, reinforcing bilateral ties and discussing collaborative strategies to further the objectives of the African Union. His engagements served as a testament to Algeria’s proactive diplomacy and its leadership role in shaping the continent’s governance landscape.
The Algerian leader’s participation in the APRM summit aligns with his broader vision of positioning Algeria as a driving force in Africa’s institutional development, governance enhancement, and economic integration.
