Algiers, Algeria | October 6th, 2024 —  Less than a month into his second term, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune engaged in a candid and wide-ranging media interview with representatives of the national press. In his signature forthright style, the President addressed a series of pressing national and international issues, leaving no stone unturned in his responses.

Commitment to Excellence: A New Government Before Year’s End

Among the most significant revelations was Tebboune’s pledge to announce a new government before the year’s conclusion. The President emphasized that this new administration will be comprised of the nation’s finest talents. “I am in search of the best and brightest minds this country has to offer,” he declared, underscoring his commitment to selecting national experts who can propel Algeria into a new era of progress.

This statement comes amid an electoral process that has been marred by accusations of irregularities. The National Independent Electoral Authority’s (ANIE) announcement of provisional results was met with swift resistance from the campaign teams of three candidates, who collectively criticized the results as being fraught with “inaccuracies, contradictions, ambiguities, and inconsistencies.” President Tebboune confirmed that, in response to these concerns, investigations have been launched at the request of the aggrieved candidates. “Instructions have been given for thorough investigations, and the results will be made public because the people deserve transparency,” Tebboune asserted, reassuring the nation that integrity remains paramount in his administration.

A National Dialogue on the Horizon

In addition to the forthcoming government overhaul, Tebboune reaffirmed his pledge to initiate a national dialogue during his second term. First mentioned in his September 17th inauguration speech, this dialogue will serve as a platform for all national forces to participate, and is seen as a cornerstone of what Tebboune calls “the consolidation of true democracy.” The President set the timeline for the dialogue to take place in late 2025 or early 2026, stressing that ample preparation is necessary to ensure its success. “We must prepare ourselves for this important dialogue,” he stated, projecting confidence in its potential to unify Algeria’s diverse political and social landscape.

Moreover, Tebboune reiterated his intention to revise the country’s political party law, an issue also highlighted during his inauguration. He emphasized that political parties would be actively involved in the drafting of this revised law, ensuring a collaborative approach that honors democratic principles.

Protecting Social Welfare Amid Economic Challenges

Amidst growing concerns over the rising cost of living, particularly the spike in coffee prices, President Tebboune reassured Algerians of the government’s commitment to shielding ordinary citizens from economic hardship. “The state is absorbing the difference in coffee prices compared to the global market through public funds, in order to preserve the purchasing power of the average citizen,” Tebboune explained, reiterating Algeria’s steadfast adherence to its social policies.

“We have capped prices,” the President added, pointing to this measure as evidence that Algeria will not abandon its people. He further emphasized the necessity of building a robust economy that can support these social safety nets while also fostering long-term prosperity. His remarks reflect a delicate balancing act between safeguarding citizens’ immediate needs and advancing economic reforms aimed at creating a sustainable future.

Tackling Smuggling Through Strategic Trade Zones

President Tebboune also addressed the pressing issue of smuggling, which continues to undermine Algeria’s economic stability. He proposed the creation of free trade zones along the country’s borders with neighboring nations, suggesting this as a viable solution to curb illicit trade. “The fight against smuggling will be won by establishing free zones between Algeria and our brotherly neighboring countries,” Tebboune stated. This bold initiative is expected to bolster legitimate trade while clamping down on the underground economy, thereby reinforcing Algeria’s economic sovereignty.

Algeria’s Foreign Relations: Strategic Partnerships and Global Diplomacy

Turning to international affairs, President Tebboune offered clear insight into Algeria’s global alliances. He was particularly firm in his defense of Algeria’s relationship with Russia, a topic that has garnered considerable attention on the international stage. “Algeria will never act against Russia,” he declared, stressing the enduring friendship and mutual interests that bind the two nations. His remarks reflect a determination to maintain balanced and pragmatic foreign relations, despite the shifting geopolitical currents.

French-Algerian Agreement of 1968: A Controversial Legacy

The President did not shy away from discussing the controversy surrounding the French-Algerian agreement of 1968, which has become the focus of heated debate in France, with calls for its revision. Tebboune firmly dismissed these calls, denouncing the agreement as the “banner behind which an army of extremists marches.” His sharp rebuke signals a refusal to allow external forces to dictate Algeria’s historical and legal standing, particularly regarding its colonial past.

A Vision Rooted in Sovereignty and Unity

Throughout the interview, President Tebboune’s message was clear: Algeria’s path forward must be driven by its own people and guided by its own principles. From the forthcoming government overhaul to plans for national dialogue and economic reform, his administration is committed to fostering a strong, independent, and united Algeria. Whether through addressing internal electoral disputes, advancing international partnerships, or combating economic challenges, President Tebboune remains focused on elevating Algeria on the global stage while safeguarding the welfare of its citizens at home.
