Algiers, Algeria | January 14th, 2025 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence, chaired a Council of Ministers meeting on Monday, focusing on a pivotal social security bill, mechanisms to strengthen union rights and social dialogue, and preparatory measures for the holy month of Ramadan, according to an official communiqué.
The President commenced the session with a review presented by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, summarizing government activities over the past two weeks. Following interventions by ministers on legislative proposals and policy presentations, President Tebboune issued a series of directives aimed at safeguarding social justice, market stability, and workers’ rights.
Approval of the Social Security Bill: Extending Maternity Leave and Equal Rights
The Council approved a bill on social security, emphasizing the extension of maternity leave and affirming the principle of gender equality in wages and benefits. President Tebboune hailed the legislation as a testament to Algeria’s progressive stance on women’s rights, reaffirming the state’s commitment to equity as enshrined in the Declaration of November 1st and the legacy of women’s participation in the liberation struggle.
Ramadan Preparations: Market Vigilance and Anti-Speculation Measures
In preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, the President stressed the necessity of maintaining market stability and safeguarding the population against speculative practices. He instructed government bodies to heighten vigilance and update monitoring systems to prevent disruptions in market supply. Severe legal sanctions will be imposed on any attempts at speculation, ensuring price stability and consumer protection during this sensitive period.
Strengthening Union Rights and Social Dialogue
Addressing union activity, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s constitutional guarantee of union rights, emphasizing the state’s obligation to protect workers’ freedoms. He called for the restructuring of the national union framework in line with newly enacted legislation, ensuring the existence of representative and influential unions capable of enhancing labor conditions through constructive dialogue.

- An organic law governing the competencies, organization, and functioning of the Conflict Tribunal.
- The budget settlement bill for the fiscal year 2022.
