President Tebboune Presides Over Council of Ministers Meeting, Here Are Key Directives!

Algiers, Algeria | June 23rd, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune chaired a Council of Ministers meeting on Sunday, focusing on a draft law for the protection of individuals with special needs. The session also covered several key topics, including electrical network interconnection projects, the 2024 harvest campaign, the modernization of electronic and mobile payment systems, and the approval of a new university hospital center in Tizi Ouzou.

Key Directives and Discussions:

1. 2024 Harvest Campaign:
– The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development reported a savings of $1.2 billion for the Algerian Treasury due to an abundant production of durum wheat, moving the country closer to total self-sufficiency.
– President Tebboune set a strategic goal to expand cultivated areas in the southern regions to 500,000 hectares, including investments from Qatar (117,000 hectares), Italy (36,000 hectares), and national efforts (120,000 hectares).
– Emphasizing the importance of achieving total self-sufficiency in durum wheat, which constitutes 80% of Algeria’s wheat production.
– The President mandated the production of corn and prohibited its harvest before full maturity.
– The Minister of Agriculture was instructed to involve farmers in awareness campaigns to improve productivity per hectare, aiming for a minimum yield of 55 quintals/hectare in the southern regions.

2. New University Hospital Center in Tizi Ouzou:
– Approval was given for a direct agreement between Cosider Group and the Ministry of Housing to commence the construction of a 500-bed hospital after all necessary studies are completed. This facility aims to benefit the residents of Tizi Ouzou.

3. Electrical Network Interconnection:
– In-depth studies were ordered for the interconnection of northern and southern electrical networks, with the project to be executed in stages based on priority.
– Reinforcement of the electrical grid in Béchar, Adrar, Ouargla, and In Salah was advised to meet the growing electricity demands, particularly in summer and with the expansion of economic activities in the Grand South.
– The President instructed the use of underground cables in urban areas to enhance resilience and reduce losses.
– The project should also include an electricity supply plan for new railway lines and agricultural operations in the Grand South.

4. Law for the Protection of Individuals with Special Needs:
– The draft law for the protection and promotion of individuals with special needs was approved.

5. Other Directives:
– Acceleration of the recruitment process for youth in the Youth and Sports sectors in the southern regions.
– Initiation of a national plan to connect large dams according to a defined schedule.
– Ensuring government members rigorously address citizens’ concerns and maintain constant communication with them.
– Advance notification to citizens via local radio stations regarding any maintenance or technical disruptions affecting energy supplies.
