Algiers, Algeria | December 10th, 2024 — In a move towards regional cooperation and sustainable resource management, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ratified an agreement aimed at fostering joint efforts between Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya in the management of shared groundwater resources across the northern Sahara region. The agreement, signed on April 24, 2024, marks a crucial milestone in the collaboration between the three North African nations, underscoring the importance of water as a vital resource for future development.

The agreement was formalized during a high-level trilateral summit between President Tebboune, Tunisian President Kais Saied, and Libyan Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed Younes El-Menfi, held in Algiers. The signing ceremony, attended by the ministers of water resources from the three countries, came just hours after the summit, reflecting the urgent need for regional cooperation in addressing water scarcity and ensuring long-term access to this precious resource.

A Step Towards Unified Regional Action

The-then Minister of Water Resources and Environment, Taha Derbal, who spoke at the signing event, emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement. He stated, “This agreement opens a new and promising chapter in the coordination and collaboration between the three countries, in a critical field—water resources—that is intrinsically linked to all developmental processes.” Derbal further highlighted that the agreement not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the foundation for deeper cooperation in other areas, leveraging the available opportunities and potential resources of the region.
