President Tebboune Receives Special Envoy from the President of Somalia

Algiers, Algeria | November 21st, 2024 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the Special Envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Tahir Mahmoud Ghelle, who conveyed a written message from Somalia’s President.

The meeting, which took place in Algiers, focused on the strengthening of bilateral relations between Algeria and Somalia, and addressed areas of mutual concern on the international stage. Mr. Ghelle emphasized that the message included discussions on enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation on various issues of common interest.

Notably, Ghelle highlighted that Somalia is set to join the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member in January of the coming year. This significant development was among the key points conveyed during the meeting, marking a milestone in Somalia’s role in international diplomacy.

Reflecting on his meeting with President Tebboune, Ghelle noted the Algerian leader’s deep interest in Somalia’s issues, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to continuing its strong and supportive relationship with Somalia. He stated, “I have seen firsthand President Tebboune’s dedication to the Somali cause, and we look forward to ensuring that Algerian-Somali relations remain robust, based on mutual cooperation and solidarity in regional and global matters.”

This meeting is a crucial step in reinforcing the growing bond between Algeria and Somalia, with both nations emphasizing their shared aspirations for regional stability and international peace.

Earlier, Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad of Algeria, held a meeting with Dahir Mohamud Gelle, the special envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, in Algiers. This encounter marked a key step towards deepening bilateral relations between Algeria and Somalia, reflecting the shared strategic interests of both nations in the African and international arenas.

The discussions between Attaf and Gelle centered on the current state of Algerian-Somali relations, with a particular focus on ways to further strengthen these ties. One of the critical topics addressed was Somalia’s imminent assumption of a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, set to commence in January of the upcoming year.

The two officials underscored the importance of Somalia’s upcoming role at the Security Council, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to enhance peace and stability across Africa. Algeria has consistently been a staunch supporter of Somalia’s aspirations on the international stage, and this meeting reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting its brotherly African nation in securing a stronger position within global decision-making bodies.
