Algiers- Algeria, May 5, 2024 – During the 15th Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s message, delivered by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to advocating for the Palestinian cause and urged the global community to intervene to halt the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
President Tebboune highlighted that the Palestinian people, particularly those in Gaza, are enduring a genocidal conflict perpetrated by Zionist occupation forces. He criticized international bodies for failing to enforce internationally recognized resolutions, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in response to these atrocities. He lamented the loss of humanity and civilization in Palestine, emphasizing the absence of legal, ethical, and moral standards.
Tebboune underscored that the situation in occupied Palestine not only signifies a breakdown of international law and the global order but also undermines the legitimacy of human rights and international law as fundamental principles. He questioned the state of human rights when an occupying force denies fundamental human values and deprives an entire population of their right to exist.
Urgent Appeal for Immediate Action and Sustainable Peace
President Tebboune urged an immediate and sustainable halt to aggression against Palestinians and stressed the urgent implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2728. He called for holding the occupying power accountable for its crimes and facilitating humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Additionally, he reiterated the need for a political process to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian cause, including recognition of an independent Palestinian state with East El Quds as its capital. Tebboune insisted on a stronger stance to compel the international community to protect Palestinians from the criminal acts committed against them.
Protection of Muslim Holy Sites and Combating Islamophobia
President Tebboune called for collective action to defend Muslim holy sites, particularly El Quds and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, against ongoing attempts at Judaization and ethnic cleansing. He advocated for a comprehensive strategy to counter Islamophobia, which systematically discriminates against Muslim communities and undermines Muslim unity.
Tebboune emphasized the role of the OIC and its member states in safeguarding Muslim holy sites and combating extremism and terrorism while promoting values of coexistence, openness, and tolerance. He highlighted the need for OIC reform to empower the organization to achieve its objectives and effectively address the challenges facing the Muslim world, with the Palestinian cause as a primary concern.
In conclusion, President Tebboune asserted that the OIC stands at a critical juncture and must fulfill its duty to the Muslim community. He urged the organization to take decisive actions and make decisions that truly represent the aspirations and desires of its people in confronting the pressing challenges of the current era.
