Algeria: President Tebboune Visits Ministry of National Defense, Emphasizes Sovereignty and Security

Algiers- Algeria, May 9, 2024 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, visited the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense on Wednesday. He was welcomed by General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP).

Following the playing of the national anthem and a guard of honor by various formations of the ANP, President Tebboune greeted his hosts, including the Commander of the Republican Guard, the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defense, the Commanders of Forces and the National Gendarmerie, the Commander of the 1st Military Region, the Army Inspector General, as well as Department Chiefs of the Ministry of National Defense and the ANP General Staff.

President Tebboune then delivered an address to ANP officers and personnel, which was broadcast via videoconference to all ANP Command Centers, the six Military Regions, major units, and higher military schools across the country. He began by acknowledging the pride of the Algerian people in their honorable history, commemorated on the National Day of Memory, and recalled the sacrifices made against the barbaric crimes of French colonialism.

President Tebboune stressed that the preservation of national sovereignty relies on a strong and formidable army and a developed economy. He highlighted Algeria’s tangible and unequivocal development, with major achievements expected by 2027, especially with the completion of large-scale projects. He reiterated Algeria’s rejection of external debt, citing it as a factor that jeopardizes the nation’s sovereign decision-making. Tebboune also reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to just causes, notably the Palestinian issue and the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people.

Furthermore, he praised the efforts of various ANP units and commended General of the Army Chanegriha for ensuring optimal operational readiness for the armed forces.

Chanegriha: “Domestic Security Situation Fully Under Control”

Earlier, General of the Army Chanegriha welcomed the President, expressing gratitude for his significant visit, demonstrating his special interest in the ANP, the worthy heir of the National Liberation Army, and all its personnel. “I wish to express, on my behalf and on behalf of all military and civilian personnel, my highest regards and sincere thanks for the honor you have bestowed upon us today by visiting the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defense. This visit reflects your particular interest in the People’s National Army, the worthy heir of the National Liberation Army, and all its personnel,” said Chanegriha.

He emphasized the ANP’s commitment to strengthen its military capabilities in all forms, as evidenced by the high level reached by combat units. Chanegriha highlighted that the internal security situation is fully under control, thanks to the efforts of brave personnel working in collaboration with other security forces. He noted the ongoing pressure on terrorist remnants and efforts to combat organized crime, drug and narcotics trafficking, illegal immigration, and illicit gold mining.

Moreover, Chanegriha stated that the ANP is committed to strengthening the sacred bond with the Algerian people, as it constitutes one of the guarantees of the nation’s sustainability. He also mentioned efforts to equip units with the latest weapons and equipment, emphasizing the development of a promising local military industry integrated into the national economy.

After signing the Guest Book, President Tebboune, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, departed from the Ministry of National Defense headquarters, bidding farewell to General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha.

President Tebboune’s visit underscored the critical role of a strong military in safeguarding Algeria’s sovereignty and security, alongside efforts to develop the country’s economy and uphold its principles on the global stage. General Chanegriha’s remarks highlighted the ANP’s commitment to maintaining internal stability and enhancing its capabilities to meet evolving challenges, in addition to its crucial link with the Algerian people.
